AFCON 2025 Babangida Ikpeba back Super Eagles to restore pride

Atlanta 1996 Olympic gold medallists Tijani Babangida and Victor Ikpeba say the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco is a crucial chance for the Super Eagles to repair Nigeria’s football image after failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. They noted that missing the World Cup for a second straight time still hurts players, officials and fans, making AFCON the key opportunity to restore national pride. Babangida told Tribalfootball he was disappointed with the Super Eagles’ display in the playoff defeat to DR Congo, saying the Congolese looked better organised and more determined on the day. He believes winning AFCON would help heal the emotional wounds of supporters who were left devastated by that loss. He is confident Nigeria can reach the final and possibly end their 12 year wait for a fourth continental crown. Benjamin Fredrick ruled out of AFCON 2025

Super Eagles defender Benjamin Fredrick has been ruled out of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after suffering a knee injury during a training session with his club. He has been a regular under Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle since making his debut against Jamaica at the Unity Cup earlier this year. Such has been his impact that he displaced team captain William Troost-Ekong from the starting lineup during the last round of World Cup qualifiers. The 20-year-old centre-back was widely expected to be […]

Former Super Eagles midfielder Sunday Oliseh praised 20-year-old defender Benjamin Fredrick following Nigeria’s 4-1 extra-time win against Gabon in the 2026 World Cup playoff semi-final. Oliseh called Fredrick “the most influential player” on the pitch, highlighting his positioning, pace, and decisive play as Nigeria advanced after a dramatic match. Akor Adams opened the scoring before Gabon equalised, sending the game to extra time. Chidera Ejuke restored Nigeria’s lead, and Victor Osimhen scored twice to seal victory. Fredrick and Calvin Bassey anchored the defence, limiting Gabon’s threats. Oliseh celebrated Nigeria’s performance on X (Twitter), urging the Eagles to focus on their next opponent, Congo, for a place in the intercontinental playoff. Fredrick, who began his career at Kaduna’s Simoiben Academy and joined Brentford FC before a loan to Belgium, has transitioned from Nigeria’s U20s to the senior side after strong showings […]
