National grid fails again, second system disturbance in 5 days
Nigeria’s national electricity grid failed again on Tuesday morning around 11am, throwing many homes and businesses into darkness in what is the second nationwide outage in five days. Data from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), a unit of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), showed total generation from just two GENCOs at about 219 megawatts at the time of the disturbance. Head of Communications at NISO, Mr Kazah Akau, downplayed the incident, saying it was “not actually a collapse but a little disturbance” and promised that an official statement would be issued. However, the sharp drop in available power once again highlighted the fragility of the grid and the impact of repeated disruptions on the already strained economy.
