Arbeloa urges UEFA to turn anti racism drive into real action

Real Madrid coach Alvaro Arbeloa has urged UEFA to back its anti racism slogans with strong and consistent action after the alleged racist abuse of Vinicius Junior in a Champions League match against Benfica. He said European football now has a key chance to set a clear example and move beyond banners and pre match messages. UEFA has provisionally suspended Benfica midfielder Gianluca Prestianni for the second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu while it investigates Vinicius’ allegation. If the inquiry concludes that he racially abused the Brazilian forward, the 18 year old faces a minimum 10 match ban. Arbeloa said football needs a turning point in the fight against racism and called on UEFA to seize this moment. He added that Vinicius, who scored the only goal in the first leg before the incident stopped play for about 10 minutes, […]

Real Madrid handed Benfica rematch in Champions League playoffs

Real Madrid will face Benfica again in next month’s Champions League knockout playoffs after losing to the Portuguese side in their final league phase game. The draw, held in Nyon, paired teams ranked ninth to 24th in the league phase in two legged ties to be played between February 17 and 25. Winners will join the top eight teams already through to the round of 16. Benfica goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin scored in the 98th minute to seal a 4-2 win over Madrid on Wednesday, a result that left the Spanish giants ninth in the table, one point behind eighth placed Manchester City. Defending champions Paris Saint Germain, who finished 11th after failing to win any of their last three league phase matches, have been drawn against Ligue 1 rivals Monaco, who ended the phase in 21st place. Newcastle United will […]

‘No Panic’ at Chelsea Despite Mini-Slump, Says Maresca Ahead of Benfica Clash

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca insists there is “no reason to panic” over the club’s recent poor run of form, as he prepares his side for a crucial Champions League fixture against Benfica at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday. The Blues began the season strongly, lifting the FIFA Club World Cup in July, but have since lost three of their past four matches in all competitions, including their Champions League opener against Bayern Munich. Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Maresca blamed Chelsea’s disciplinary problems for the dip in results, pointing out that four of their last five defeats came after red cards. “In football, you know better than me, football is a crazy world,” Maresca said. “If you lost five games in six months and you need to say things to defend yourself, that means it’s a crazy world. I […]

Mourinho returns to Benfica as new head coach until 2027

Jose Mourinho has been named the new head coach of Benfica, signing a contract that runs until the summer of 2027. The 62-year-old replaces Bruno Lage, who was dismissed after Benfica’s shock Champions League defeat to Qarabag on Tuesday. Mourinho returns to management less than a month after being sacked by Fenerbahce, following their Champions League play-off defeat — coincidentally against Benfica. This marks Mourinho’s second spell at Benfica, having first taken charge in 2000. That stint lasted just 10 matches before he departed after a dispute with the club president. “The promise is very clear – I will live for Benfica, for my mission. I’m not the important thing – Benfica is important,” Mourinho said at his unveiling. His contract includes an option for both the club and Mourinho to review the agreement up to 10 days after the […]
