Onanuga stressed that recent high profile defections to the APC were voluntary and motivated by confidence in the president’s reform agenda. He noted that Nigeria’s Constitution guarantees freedom of association and the right to change political affiliation at any time. According to him, no one has been compelled to join the APC and it is wrong to […]

Presidency Seeks Sanction for Nnamdi Kanu’s Protesting Lawyer

The Presidency has called for sanctions against one of Nnamdi Kanu's lawyers, Aloy Ejimakor, for participating in a protest demanding his client's release. Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Information and Strategy, made the call on social media. He criticized Ejimakor for joining the #FreeNnamdiKanu protest in Abuja, which was organized by activist Omoyele Sowore. Onanuga argued that the lawyer's action is unethical because Kanu's case is still before a court. He stated that the principle of sub judice—which restricts public discussion of ongoing court cases—should prevent a lawyer from engaging in such public demonstrations. He urged the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and other legal disciplinary bodies to investigate Ejimakor's conduct and impose appropriate sanctions. The Presidency believes the lawyer should focus on building a legal defense instead of protesting.
