Lyle Foster’s Value Goes Beyond Goals for Bafana

Lyle Foster played a central role in South Africa’s AFCON 2025 group-stage campaign, and his impact went far beyond the two goals and two assists he recorded across three matches. The Bafana Bafana striker consistently influenced games through his movement, pressing, and ability to bring teammates into play. Although he has often faced criticism for his finishing consistency, the group phase highlighted the broader value he brings to the national team’s attacking structure. One of the clearest examples came during South Africa’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Zimbabwe in Marrakesh. In the 58th minute, Foster held off pressure after receiving a pass from Oswin Appollis, recycled possession intelligently, and created space for Appollis to unleash a shot that forced a strong save from goalkeeper Washington Arubi. Throughout the tournament, Foster was heavily involved in South Africa’s build-up play, averaging two key […]

Mbokazi shines despite Bafana loss to Egypt

South Africa’s Bafana Bafana suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Egypt on Friday in Agadir, but the match also highlighted the emergence of a new defensive leader in Mbekezeli Mbokazi, who delivered an assured performance against elite opposition. The decisive moment came from a controversial first-half penalty, converted by Mohamed Salah, despite Egypt being reduced to 10 men before the break. While the result went against South Africa, the 20-year-old Mbokazi stood out with a display marked by composure, discipline and tactical awareness. Deployed at left centre-back, Mbokazi had a demanding task. With Aubrey Modiba pushing forward at left-back, the responsibility fell on him to cover wide spaces and neutralise Salah, who frequently drifted inside from the right wing. The young defender responded with maturity, timing his challenges well and maintaining positional discipline throughout the contest. In the opening exchanges, […]

FIFA opens case against South Africa over ineligible player

FIFA has officially opened disciplinary proceedings against the South African Football Association (SAFA) for fielding Teboho Mokoena, an ineligible player, during a 2026 World Cup qualifier against Lesotho in March. According to South African outlet SABC Sport, FIFA confirmed in a letter dated September 15, 2025, that both Mokoena and SAFA face charges of breaching disciplinary regulations, including the fielding of an ineligible player. The case has been referred to the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, with SAFA and the player given six days to submit their defence. Mokoena, 28, should have been suspended for the Lesotho match after accumulating two yellow cards earlier in the qualifiers — first against Benin in November 2023 and then against Zimbabwe in June 2024. Under FIFA rules, this automatically triggered a one-match ban. If found guilty, Bafana Bafana could be forced to forfeit the result, […]
