Fed Govt begins implementing salary agreement with ASUU

The Federal Government has begun implementing key welfare provisions in its 2025 renegotiated agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). Education Minister Maruf Tunji Alausa said the government has fulfilled its obligation to implement a 40 percent increase in the Consolidated Academic Allowance (CAA) for ASUU members, effective from January 1, 2026. He explained that some federal universities have already reflected the new rates in lecturers’ pay, while others are being directed to fully cascade the approved increment across their payroll so all eligible academic staff benefit. The minister added that the increase has been captured and circularised by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission and that its inclusion in the 2026 budget is now a formal statutory process. Beyond CAA, Alausa said implementation of the Consolidated Tools Allowance (CATA) and other agreed welfare components is also […]

Mismanagement, governance gaps undermining Nigerian universities – ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has warned that mismanagement of funds and weak governance structures are undermining the quality and stability of Nigerian universities. The union says poor leadership practices, political interference and lack of accountability are eroding standards across public institutions. ASUU leaders accuse some university administrators of diverting or misusing resources meant for teaching, research and staff welfare. They also criticise what they describe as a growing culture of patronage in appointments, contract awards and promotions, which they say undermines merit and transparency. The union argues that repeated encroachment on university autonomy by government agencies has weakened internal governance and encouraged arbitrary decisions. It insists that councils and senates must be allowed to function independently, in line with university laws, to protect academic freedom and institutional integrity. ASUU is calling for stricter oversight of how intervention funds […]

FG, ASUU Resume Talks Over 40% Pay Rise

The Federal Government has proposed a 40 per cent salary increase for members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities as both sides prepare to resume negotiations in Abuja. The talks will be led by a government team headed by Yayale Ahmed, with ASUU’s leadership returning to the table after internal consultations. ASUU’s National Executive Council met in Abuja on Sunday and agreed that the union should continue discussions with the government. Branch leaders who attended the NEC meeting are expected to brief their members nationwide on the new proposal and the next steps. A union source, who asked not to be named because of restrictions on speaking to the media during negotiations, confirmed the offer of a 40 per cent pay rise. ASUU demands salary review, says lecturers’ welfare is a fundamental right

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Enugu State University of Science and Technology branch, has called for an urgent review of staff salaries, declaring that lecturers’ welfare is a fundamental right, not a privilege. The union said academics at the institution deserve a pay structure aligned with national benchmarks and the 25–35 per cent wage awards already implemented in other universities. ASUU argued that university teachers have endured the same salary scale for about 16 years despite repeated currency devaluations and soaring inflation. It maintained that the current pay package cannot sustain lecturers, stop brain drain or motivate quality teaching and research in Nigerian campuses. The union insisted that welfare, including fair remuneration, is a core component of workers’ fundamental rights and central to the survival of public universities. It rejected piecemeal wage awards it described as inadequate and called […]

ASUU Rejects Federal Government’s Proposed Salary Increment

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Benin Zone has rejected the salary increment recently proposed by the Federal Government, calling it insufficient to address the union’s concerns or to reverse the ongoing brain drain in Nigerian universities. Zonal Coordinator Prof. Monday Lewis Igbafen stated that the offer was “a mere drop in the ocean” compared to what’s needed. ASUU stressed the need for government to tackle all outstanding issues, including fully renegotiating the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement and truly addressing related matters. Igbafen criticized the half-hearted approach of the government, noting that Nigerian university lecturers are still being paid at a level fixed back in 2009, despite economic changes and salary hikes in other sectors. He concluded that the union would not accept piecemeal solutions, urging authorities to take university reform seriously to ensure stable and quality education in Nigeria.

ASUU Warns Universities May Shut Down Over Stalled Talks

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has warned it may begin a nationwide strike if ongoing negotiations with the Federal Government do not yield results soon. This warning comes as talks over academic staff salaries, promotion arrears, and withheld payments have stalled. ASUU officials said lecturers have been on the same salary for 16 years, noting that inflation and the rising cost of living have made conditions very difficult. They rejected the government’s proposed salary increment, describing it as inadequate to address brain drain and improve working conditions. The union also criticized the government’s slow pace in resolving issues, including unpaid wage awards, promotion arrears since 2017, and partial payment of third-party deductions. ASUU argued that the challenge is political will, not lack of funds, pointing to increased government revenue in recent years. Union leaders urged traditional rulers, civil society, […]

SSANU, NASU give FG 7-day strike notice over unpaid allowances

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and Allied Institutions (NASU) have issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Federal Government over unresolved welfare issues, warning of a nationwide strike. In a joint letter signed by SSANU President, Muhammed Ibrahim, the unions decried the “unjust disbursement of earned allowances, non-payment of outstanding salaries and arrears, and stalled renegotiation of agreements.” The letter recalled that the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of NASU and SSANU had earlier written to the government on June 18, 2025, highlighting unresolved matters. That letter led to a meeting with the Minister on July 4. According to the unions, discussions centred on: the skewed N50bn earned allowances distribution, non-payment of two months’ withheld salaries, arrears of 25/35% salary increments, and the delayed renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/NASU/SSANU agreement. While a […]

ASUU Laments FG’s Delay, Demands Tangible Offer

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has expressed frustration over what it described as the Federal Government’s continued inaction on issues affecting its members. The union is currently in discussions with the government over a review of the 2009 agreement, the last binding deal between both parties, which covers the welfare and working conditions of lecturers. On Thursday, the Minister of State for Education, Tunji Alausa, revealed that a technical committee, chaired by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, Abel Enitan, was drafting a refined proposal to present to ASUU. “We’ve decided on a counter-proposal to them. We now close by setting up a high-level technical team to clean up our proposal, come with a clean document,” Alausa explained. Reacting to the development, ASUU National President, Chris Piwuna, stressed that the union would only accept a […]
