Ansa-Asare: Torkornoo’s Conduct Hurt Her Case

Former Director of the Ghana School of Law, Kwaku Ansa-Asare, has suggested that former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo’s failure to regain her position was due to her confrontational conduct during the removal process. Speaking on The Pulse on JoyNews, Ansa-Asare said her approach only worsened her case. “The CJ did not give herself any chance to be heard appropriately. The confrontational attitude she took made it impossible for her to resume her official duties. She was so abrasive, taking the government here and there, going to ECOWAS,” he explained. He argued that the matter was constitutional and required cooperation rather than resistance. “This simple constitutional matter needed cooperation with the committee so that, at the end of the day, we would all be living witnesses to whether there was any merit in the petitions,” he said. According to him, if […]

Afenyo-Markin Slams Removal of Chief Justice Torkornoo

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has strongly criticized the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, calling the process flawed and politically motivated. Speaking to journalists in Akwatia during Tuesday’s by-election on September 2, Mr. Afenyo-Markin questioned the grounds for the dismissal, noting that the Article 146 Committee reportedly concluded findings on only one of the three charges leveled against her. “We are mourning democracy. You claim that you have charges against the Chief Justice — you are done with count one, you have counts two and three not concluded, and then you say you dismiss the person. That is the work of the Pwamang Committee? That is what Justice Pwamang did as a judge?” he asked. President John Dramani Mahama announced the Chief Justice’s removal on Monday, September 1, in a statement issued by the Minister of Government […]

Committee Reviews Evidence in Petition Against Chief Justice

The Article 146 Committee of Inquiry has disclosed that it received extensive evidence in the first petition seeking the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo. Committee Chairman Gabriel Scott Pwamang revealed that petitioner Daniel Ofori presented his case through 13 witnesses, while the suspended Chief Justice mounted her defence with 12 witnesses, including expert testimony. He confirmed that the Chief Justice personally testified and was cross-examined during the proceedings. According to Pwamang, both sides were represented by four lawyers each, and nearly 10,000 pages of documentary exhibits were reviewed. The hearings, held in camera, followed constitutional provisions but were not conducted in secrecy. Proceedings on the second petition against the Chief Justice have been adjourned after a joint request from both parties. The Committee, which is examining three petitions submitted to President John Mahama in March, granted […]
