Niger issues defence decree as reactions trail Sokoto anti ISIS airstrikes

Niger Republic has issued a new mobilisation decree in response to the recent joint Nigeria United States airstrikes on ISIS linked camps in Sokoto State. The order, adopted by the Council of Ministers chaired by General Abdurahamane Tiani, calls citizens to help defend the country’s sovereignty amid rising regional tensions. Tangaza Local Government Area in Sokoto, the main target of the Tomahawk missile strikes, lies on the Nigeria Niger border. Officials in Abuja and Washington have said operations against terrorists in the north are ongoing. Under the Nigerien decree, citizens must respond promptly to call ups, comply with requisitions and report hostile foreign nationals or obstructive activities. They are also warned against spreading messages that could undermine mobilisation efforts. Authorities in Niamey say the measure is grounded in the country’s Charter of Refoundation and defence laws, citing the need to […]

Can the Alliance of Sahel States Stop the Advance of Armed Groups?

Leaders of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso are once again facing a defining test as armed groups linked to al-Qaeda continue to expand their reach across the Sahel. Meeting in Bamako under the framework of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), the three military-led governments are seeking common ground on how to halt a security crisis that has outpaced previous regional and international responses. The stakes are high. Over the past decade, armed groups have steadily exploited weak state presence, porous borders, and local grievances to entrench themselves across large swathes of territory. Despite years of foreign military support, including French and UN-led missions, violence has intensified rather than receded. For the AES leaders, this summit is not just another diplomatic gathering—it is an attempt to redefine how the region confronts insecurity on its own terms. At the core of […]

Nigeria Sahel allies clash over detained military plane and soldiers

Nigeria and the Alliance of Sahel States are giving sharply different accounts of how a Nigerian Air Force C 130 transport plane and 11 soldiers ended up detained in Burkina Faso. The aircraft made an emergency landing in Bobo Dioulasso on Monday, but the incident has now triggered a wider diplomatic dispute over alleged airspace violations. The Alliance of Sahel States which includes Burkina Faso Mali and Niger insists the Nigerian plane entered its airspace without permission and was forced to land. In a joint statement the bloc called the episode a serious breach of sovereignty and said its air and anti aircraft defences have been placed on high alert with orders to neutralise any further unauthorised flights. Nigerian authorities reject the accusation and say the C 130 crew diverted to Bobo Dioulasso only after detecting a technical fault while […]

Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger quit International Criminal Court

Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger on Monday announced their withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC), describing it as a tool of “neo-colonial repression.” In a joint statement, the three military-led governments accused the court of bias and failing to prosecute major global crimes. They said the ICC had “proven itself incapable of handling and prosecuting war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide, and aggression.” The decision comes after a series of coups in Bamako, Ouagadougou, and Niamey between 2020 and 2023, which led the countries to form the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). Since then, they have distanced themselves from Western powers, especially former colonial ruler France, while strengthening ties with Russia. The statement added that the countries intend to build “indigenous mechanisms for peace and justice” instead of relying on international institutions. Under ICC rules, a withdrawal only takes […]
