Abuja waste contractors threaten strike over 9 months unpaid wages

Contractors responsible for waste management in Abuja have threatened to down tools from September 25 if the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) fails to settle nine months of outstanding payments. In a letter to the Coordinator of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council, the Association of FCT Solid Waste and Cleaning Contractors (AFSOWAC) said it could no longer guarantee uninterrupted sanitation services without urgent intervention. Essential services at risk AFSOWAC represents contractors overseeing 44 sanitation lots across the FCT, collectively clearing more than 1,000 tonnes of waste daily with over 100 refuse trucks and 60 tippers.
