World Cup play off: Super Eagles’ hopes fade as FIFA confirms DRC spot

Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup have suffered a final blow after world football body FIFA confirmed DR Congo as Africa’s representative in the inter confederation play off tournament. In a tournament accreditation notice and subsequent communications, FIFA listed DR Congo among the six teams that will compete in the play off, leaving no space for the Super Eagles, who had challenged their defeat to the Congolese side. Nigeria lost to DR Congo in the intercontinental play off final in Rabat, with the match ending 1–1 in regulation time before the Leopards won 4–3 on penalties to claim Africa’s last slot. The Nigeria Football Federation later petitioned FIFA, alleging that some DR Congo players were ineligible and that competition rules had been breached, but FIFA ruled that all the players were properly registered and cleared to play. Kenya open to 2027 AFCON delay over election tensions

Kenya’s local organising committee says it would welcome a postponement of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations because of likely election related tensions in the region. Committee chair Nicholas Musonye told AFP that shifting the tournament to 2028 would be good for Kenya as the country heads toward general elections in August 2027. Musonye noted that past polls in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda have been marked by volatility and violence, raising concerns about guaranteeing security for a major continental competition. He argued that hosting AFCON during such a period could expose fans and teams to unnecessary risks. His comments came after a report in the UK’s Guardian newspaper suggested AFCON 2027, due to be co hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, might be delayed because the three countries are not yet ready. A Confederation of African Football inspection team is […]

Legends hail Sadio Mane for saving African football in AFCON final

Former Super Eagles stars Sunday Oliseh, Daniel Amokachi and Odion Ighalo have praised Sadio Mane for his key role in calming chaos during the ill tempered AFCON 2025 final between Senegal and hosts Morocco. They said his actions on the night helped save the image of African football. The match in Rabat almost broke down when several Senegal players, encouraged by coach Pape Thiaw, walked off in protest after VAR awarded Morocco a late penalty for a tug on Brahim Diaz’s shoulder. The game was halted for about 15 minutes before Mane persuaded his teammates to return to the pitch. Diaz later missed the penalty and Pape Gueye scored in extra time to seal Senegal’s second AFCON title. Many observers still described Mane, a former Liverpool and Bayern Munich star, as the true hero of the night for putting the […]

Burkina Faso sack coach Traore after AFCON 2025 exit

Burkina Faso have sacked head coach Brama Traore and his entire backroom staff following the team’s exit from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. The Burkina Faso Football Federation announced the decision on Wednesday, citing the need for a new direction after a disappointing last 16 elimination. Traore, 63, took charge of the Stallions in March 2024, replacing Frenchman Hubert Velud, who was also dismissed after a last 16 exit at the previous AFCON. Under his watch, Burkina Faso failed to reach the quarter finals, losing 3–0 to defending champions Ivory Coast in the knockout phase. In the wake of the defeat, Traore admitted that his tactics did not work and took responsibility for the poor performance. He also blamed the team’s struggles on the absence of several key players and said the squad lacked intensity and desire on the […]

Nigeria beat Algeria to reach AFCON semi-final

Nigeria produced a commanding display to defeat Algeria 2-0 in Marrakesh, booking their place in the Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals with an impressive and controlled performance. The Super Eagles, chasing a fourth continental title, took full control of the match and will now face tournament hosts Morocco in Rabat on Wednesday in what promises to be a high-stakes showdown. After a dominant first half in which Nigeria created several clear chances, the breakthrough arrived shortly after the restart. In the 47th minute, Bruno Onyemeachi delivered a precise cross from the left, and Victor Osimhen rose at the back post to power a header past Luca Zidane. Nigeria doubled their lead just 10 minutes later. Alex Iwobi split the Algerian defence with a perfectly weighted pass, allowing Osimhen to break free. Instead of shooting, the striker calmly squared the ball […]

Victor Osimhen: Looking beyond the goal machine

Victor Osimhen is widely known as a relentless goal scorer and one of the most aggressive forwards of his generation. Yet away from the penalty box, there is a more reflective side to the Super Eagles star that many fans rarely see. On the pitch, Osimhen plays with intensity, constant movement and a visible hunger to score, sometimes clashing with opponents, referees or even teammates. Coaches and analysts say that energy is driven by a deep desire to help his team win and a refusal to accept defeat. Off the field, those close to him describe a very different personality. Friends and teammates talk about a playful, generous figure who often reaches out to younger players and quietly supports people from his Lagos neighbourhood. Osimhen’s rise from street hawking in Lagos to becoming one of Africa’s most feared strikers has […]

Nigeria’s Depth Shines in Convincing Win Over Uganda

Nigeria delivered a strong message to their Africa Cup of Nations rivals with a confident 3–1 victory over Uganda, achieved with a heavily rotated squad. Head coach Eric Sékou Chelle will take particular satisfaction from the display, as it underlined the Super Eagles’ depth and attacking strength even without several regular starters. Midfielder Raphael Onyedika was the standout performer, producing a composed and commanding display capped by two well-taken goals. His influence in the centre of the pitch controlled the tempo and limited Uganda’s ability to build sustained attacks. Paul Onuachu also impressed, scoring Nigeria’s third goal and entering the history books as the 70th Nigerian player to score at the Africa Cup of Nations — more than any other nation has produced. Despite their dominance, Nigeria again showed a familiar weakness late on. With the game already won, they […]

Osimhen Scores as Nigeria Edge Tunisia at AFCON

Nigeria delivered one of their strongest performances of the AFCON 2025 group stage with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Tunisia, confirming their status as serious contenders in the tournament. Wilfred Ndidi and Ademola Lookman added to Nigeria’s advantage in the second half, putting the team 3-0 ahead and seemingly in full control of the match. Tunisia, however, refused to fold. Two late goals reduced the margin and turned the final minutes into a tense affair, but Nigeria held firm to secure all three points. The result guarantees the Super Eagles top spot in their group, regardless of the outcome of their final match […]

Ndidi: Super Eagles motivated by painful 2021 AFCON loss to Tunisia

Nigeria captain Wilfred Ndidi says the Super Eagles will use the memory of their shock defeat to Tunisia at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations as motivation when the two sides meet again in the group stage on Friday. Five years ago, Nigeria entered the round-of-16 clash as overwhelming favourites after a flawless group campaign that included a win over seven-time champions Egypt. Tunisia, by contrast, scraped through as one of the best third-placed teams. However, the Carthage Eagles stunned Nigeria with a 1-0 victory, capitalising on a defensive error and a red card shown to Alex Iwobi. Speaking ahead of Friday’s encounter, Ndidi described the defeat as a painful moment but insisted the current squad is focused on the present. “It was a painful loss in 2021,” Ndidi said at the pre-match press conference. “The guys were really prepared […]
