Afghan Taliban open to talks after Pakistan bombs Kabul, Kandahar

Afghanistan’s Taliban rulers have said they are willing to negotiate with Pakistan after Pakistani forces carried out major air and ground strikes in Kabul and Kandahar, killing dozens of fighters on both sides in the worst clashes between the neighbours in years. Pakistan hit targets in the Afghan capital and the southern city of Kandahar, where Taliban leaders are based, saying it was responding to Afghan attacks and warning that its “cup of patience has overflowed” and that relations had entered a state of “open war”. Thick black smoke and large fires were seen at strike sites in Kabul, while both governments reported heavy casualties but gave sharply conflicting death tolls. Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed that Pakistani jets bombed areas of Kabul, Kandahar and Paktia overnight and then struck Paktia, Paktika, Khost and Laghman again on Friday, saying there […]

Pakistan Strikes Kill Dozens in Afghanistan

Pakistan carried out multiple overnight air strikes across Afghanistan, killing at least 18 people, including women and children, according to the Taliban. Islamabad said the strikes targeted seven alleged militant camps near the border, following recent suicide bombings in Pakistan. The Afghan government condemned the attacks, saying civilian homes and a religious school were hit. The Taliban confirmed that strikes affected Nangarhar and Paktika provinces. In Girdi Kas village, only five members of a 23-person family survived the attacks, according to a local resident. A Taliban spokesperson confirmed 18 deaths in the family. Other areas, including Bermal and Urgun districts, were also hit, but no casualties were reported there as targeted buildings were empty. Pakistan’s Ministry of Information described the operation as “intelligence-based selective targeting” against members of Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan and affiliates of ISIS-Khorasan. The strikes were said to be […]

US freezes asylum decisions after National Guard killing

The United States has frozen all asylum decisions after an Afghan national allegedly shot two National Guard members near the White House, killing one and critically injuring the other. President Donald Trump used the attack to harden his anti-migrant stance, vowing to “permanently pause” immigration from what he calls “third world countries” and to roll back millions of admissions approved under former President Joe Biden. US Citizenship and Immigration Services director Joseph Edlow said his agency had “suspended all asylum rulings” until officials can guarantee that every foreign national is vetted and screened to the “fullest extent possible.” The State Department, led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, also announced a pause on issuing visas to anyone travelling on Afghan passports, citing national security concerns. Authorities have identified the shooting suspect as 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan who once served […]

Afghan earthquake kills 20, injures over 500 in northern region

A powerful earthquake struck northern Afghanistan overnight, killing at least 20 people and injuring more than 500 others, the government said on Monday. The 6.3-magnitude quake hit near the city of Mazar-i-Sharif, one of the country’s largest urban centres. According to the US Geological Survey, the tremor occurred at a depth of 28 kilometres, with the epicentre located near Mazar-i-Sharif in Balkh province. Health ministry spokesman Sharafat Zaman said, “Based on the information we have so far, 534 people have been injured and more than 20 fatalities have been taken to hospitals in Samangan and Balkh provinces.” In Mazar-i-Sharif, residents fled their homes in panic as buildings shook. The city’s historic Blue Mosque, a 15th-century landmark, suffered visible damage, with parts of a minaret collapsing onto the grounds. Reports from Kabul, around 420 kilometres to the south, also confirmed that […]

Afghanistan, Pakistan Agree to Ceasefire After Border Clashes

Afghanistan and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire, ending days of deadly fighting along their shared border that killed dozens and injured hundreds. The truce was mediated by Qatar and Turkey during talks held in Doha. Both nations have pledged to respect each other's sovereignty and refrain from hostile actions. A key part of the agreement is that Afghanistan will not support militant groups carrying out attacks against Pakistan. Both sides have also promised not to target each other's security forces, civilians, or critical infrastructure. Pakistan's Defense Minister confirmed the deal, stating that "cross-border terrorism from Afghan territory will cease immediately." The Taliban government in Afghanistan responded positively to the outcome. The two countries are scheduled to meet again in Istanbul on October 25th to discuss the details of the agreement further.

India Hosts Taliban Delegation in Historic Diplomatic Reset

More than four years after the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021, which forced India to shut down its embassy in Kabul and evacuate diplomats amid the collapse of the Western-backed Afghan government, New Delhi has now extended a red-carpet welcome to the group’s leadership. A delegation led by Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi has arrived in the Indian capital for a weeklong official visit, marking the first-ever visit by a Taliban leader to India. Muttaqi, who remains on a United Nations sanctions list, received a temporary travel exemption from the UN to attend the meetings. The visit represents a striking shift in India’s foreign policy. Analysts describe it as a strategic move of pragmatism — aimed at countering Pakistani influence in Afghanistan, as ties between Kabul and Islamabad have recently soured over cross-border tensions. Indian officials, while […]

Taliban Govt Says US Envoy Agrees to Prisoner Swap

The Taliban government on Saturday claimed that Washington’s special envoy Adam Boehler agreed to move forward with a US–Afghanistan prisoner exchange during a rare visit to Kabul. According to a statement from Deputy Prime Minister Abdul Ghani Baradar’s office, Boehler said “both countries will exchange prisoners” after talks with Taliban leaders. The US State Department has not immediately confirmed the announcement, and no timeline has been set for the swap. At least one American citizen, Mahmood Habibi, remains missing in Afghanistan. The US has offered a $5 million reward for information on his whereabouts, while Taliban officials deny involvement in his 2022 disappearance. Earlier this year, airline mechanic George Glezmann was freed after more than two years in detention, following a March visit to Kabul by Boehler. Boehler, joined on Saturday by former US envoy Zalmay Khalilzad, also met with […]

Trump Moves to Blacklist Nations for Wrongful US Detentions

US President Donald Trump on Friday signed an executive order to create a blacklist of countries accused of unjustly detaining American citizens, introducing sweeping penalties including travel bans. The order establishes a new designation — “state sponsors of wrongful detention” — mirroring the existing US list of state sponsors of terrorism. “With this EO you are signing today, you are drawing a line in the sand that US citizens will not be used as bargaining chips,” Trump aide Sebastian Gorka told reporters in the Oval Office. The Trump administration did not immediately disclose the countries likely to be listed, but a senior US official confirmed that China, Iran, and Afghanistan were under review for what Washington calls “persistent hostage diplomacy.” Countries designated under the new system could face sanctions, export controls, and visa bans for officials complicit in wrongful imprisonment.
