Yuletide: Domestic Operator Faults Hike in Airfares
Less than three months after several domestic Nigerian airlines raised ticket prices to South-East and South-South destinations ahead of the Christmas period, Aero Contractors MD/CEO Captain Ado Sanusi has condemned the move, calling it a “wrong business model.” While acknowledging that airlines typically adjust fares based on supply and demand, Sanusi described the practice of hiking airfares during the Yuletide as unfair to travellers. Sanusi suggested airlines should better manage booking inventories, fare buckets, and advance sales rather than relying on last-minute price increases. He emphasized that although higher demand during the holidays justifies some price changes, unfair spikes undermine trust with customers. In August, Air Peace and United Nigeria notably increased ticket prices for popular routes such as Lagos-Asaba, Lagos-Enugu, Benin, and Owerri, with industry justification based on peak one-way traffic and economic factors.
