Nigeria is poor because we celebrate thieves – Obi

Former Anambra State governor Peter Obi says Nigeria remains poor because the country celebrates corrupt people instead of holding them accountable. He argued that Nigeria is not truly a poor nation but has been made poor by years of bad leadership and a culture that rewards those who steal public funds. Obi said that in many cases, people who have looted public resources are honoured with chieftaincy titles, front row seats at public events and loud celebrations, instead of being questioned about the source of their wealth. He compared Nigeria with other countries where citizens resist bad governance, stressing that Nigerians often sing, dance and praise leaders who have failed them, even when millions are living in hardship. According to him, the main problem is that “thieves” are allowed to manage national resources, and this has led to widespread poverty, […]

Reps seek tighter defence accountability in 2026 budget

The House of Representatives Committee on Defence has called for stricter accountability, result driven spending and a comprehensive security strategy in the 2026 defence budget. Chairman of the committee, Babajimi Benson, made the call in Abuja as the panel began budget defence sessions with the Ministry of Defence and its agencies. Benson described the exercise as a sacred constitutional duty and a key stage in the appropriation process. He said it provides a platform for rigorous scrutiny, constructive engagement and mutual accountability in the interest of national security. He praised the Armed Forces and security agencies for gains recorded against insurgency, terrorism and other crimes across various theatres of operation. However, he warned that persistent security challenges show the need for deeper reforms, better coordination and smarter use of limited resources. Benson stressed that higher allocations must come with measurable […]

Obi challenges Tinubu over failed power promise after new grid collapse

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has questioned President Bola Tinubu over his campaign promise to deliver steady electricity, following another collapse of Nigeria’s national grid in January 2026. In a statement posted on his verified X account on Wednesday, Obi recalled Tinubu’s 2022 campaign pledge that if he failed to provide stable power in his first four years in office, Nigerians should not vote for him for a second term. He said the recent power failures clearly contradict that promise and should concern all Nigerians. Obi noted that the national grid had already collapsed twice in January 2026, even before the end of the month, and about twelve times in 2025. He described the frequent collapses as a sign of deep problems in the power sector, despite repeated assurances from the government. He also criticised President Tinubu’s frequent […]

Prioritise key reforms, CISLAC tells National Assembly

The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has urged the 10th National Assembly to prioritise governance, accountability and key legislative reforms as it resumes sitting for 2026. The group warned lawmakers against early electioneering ahead of the 2027 polls, saying political distractions could undermine their work. In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Auwal Ibrahim Musa (Rafsanjani), CISLAC described 2026 as a critical year for both President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration and the legislature, with citizens expecting concrete results from policies rolled out since 2023. Rafsanjani cautioned that legislative productivity often declines in pre‑election periods and noted that proposals to hold general elections as early as November 2026 could heighten public anxiety and weaken governance. CISLAC said Nigeria’s harsh economic realities, insecurity, rising debt and declining public trust demand a focused, responsive and accountable parliament rather than one seen […]

Police insist bail is free, urge public to report erring officers

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has restated that bail is free in all police formations, warning officers against extorting suspects or their relatives under the guise of granting administrative bail. FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, gave the assurance while reacting to public complaints that some personnel were still demanding money before releasing suspects on bail. Adeh clarified that no officer is authorised to request or receive payment for bail, describing such demands as corrupt, unprofessional and punishable under police regulations. She urged members of the public to insist on their rights, refuse unlawful payments and document any attempt at extortion, including names, ranks, stations and evidence where possible. The command encouraged citizens to promptly report erring officers through the Divisional Police Officers, Area Commanders, the Police Complaints Response Unit and official hotlines and social media channels. It also […]

Mismanagement, governance gaps undermining Nigerian universities – ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has warned that mismanagement of funds and weak governance structures are undermining the quality and stability of Nigerian universities. The union says poor leadership practices, political interference and lack of accountability are eroding standards across public institutions. ASUU leaders accuse some university administrators of diverting or misusing resources meant for teaching, research and staff welfare. They also criticise what they describe as a growing culture of patronage in appointments, contract awards and promotions, which they say undermines merit and transparency. The union argues that repeated encroachment on university autonomy by government agencies has weakened internal governance and encouraged arbitrary decisions. It insists that councils and senates must be allowed to function independently, in line with university laws, to protect academic freedom and institutional integrity. ASUU is calling for stricter oversight of how intervention funds […]

AU anti graft board seeks youth partnership to fight corruption

The African Union Advisory Board Against Corruption has pledged to deepen collaboration with young people across the continent in order to tackle corruption and build a future based on integrity and justice. Chairperson Kwami Edem Senanu made the commitment in Arusha, Tanzania, in a statement marking International Anti Corruption Day 2025. Senanu described Africa’s youth as future custodians of the continent who are not only victims of corruption and illicit financial flows but also powerful agents of change. He warned that corruption undermines development, erodes public trust and blocks human progress by stealing resources and opportunities. Citing estimates by Mo Ibrahim, he noted that Africa loses around 125 billion dollars every year to corruption. He said the day should therefore be seen not only as a reminder of losses but also as a fresh opportunity to renew collective resolve to […]

Nigeria Dangerously Close to Normalising Terror — Ex-Minister Essien

Former Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Chief Nduese Essien, has voiced grave concerns over Nigeria’s worsening insecurity, warning the country is “dangerously close to normalising terror.” In a statement, Essien cited recent coordinated attacks and abductions—including the execution of Brigadier General Musa Uba and three soldiers in Borno, 64 kidnapped in Zamfara, 25 female students taken in Kebbi, and over 300 Catholic school pupils abducted in Niger. Essien argues these atrocities have become daily realities, undermining farming, worship, and general life. He faults the Tinubu administration for lacking urgency and for appointing security chiefs lacking strategic defence expertise. Essien claims politicisation and corruption threaten to erode both public trust and the capacity to fight criminal networks. The ex-minister wants a strategy anchored on intelligence-led operations, strong community security, accountability, and targeting sponsors of terrorism regardless of their social […]
