FCCPC moves against non compliant digital lenders

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission has begun phased enforcement against digital money lenders that failed to comply with the 2025 Digital, Electronic, Online and Non Traditional Consumer Lending Regulations. Operators were given until January 5, 2026 to regularise their operations. In a statement, Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Tunji Bello said the compliance window has closed and enforcement has started in a fair and orderly manner. He explained that the move is to give full effect to the new rules and ensure regulatory certainty in Nigeria’s digital lending market. The Commission has withdrawn conditional approvals earlier granted to some lenders that did not complete their regularisation within the transition period. These operators have now been removed from the FCCPC’s public register of approved digital lenders until they fully meet all requirements. Bello said the register is […]

Nigerian Army warns public about fake social media accounts impersonating COAS

The Nigerian Army has warned the public about fake social media accounts created by fraudsters claiming to represent the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu. The alert was issued in a statement on Friday by Army spokesperson Colonel Apollonia Anele. Anele clarified that the Chief of Army Staff does not operate any official social media account on any platform. She urged Nigerians to be extremely cautious and vigilant so they do not fall victim to scams using Shaibu’s name or the Nigerian Army’s image. The Army explained that the operators of these fake accounts may try to defraud people, solicit funds or spread false information while pretending to speak for the COAS. Members of the public were strongly advised not to follow, engage with, respond to or share content from such accounts. According to the statement, the Nigerian […]

Petrol prices stay high despite Dangote slash

Many filling stations across Nigeria have yet to reduce their pump prices despite Dangote Refinery’s cut in ex depot price, which should see petrol sell at about N739 or N740 per litre. Checks by reporters showed that several outlets still sell far above this level, with prices in some places close to N900 per litre. In Lagos and its outskirts, many MRS filling stations were found selling at around N850 per litre, about N110 higher than the price Dangote Group’s president, Aliko Dangote, said the company’s retail outlets would charge. At Alagbole on the Lagos Ogun border, petrol sold for N850, while MRS stations on Ekoro Road and in Abule Egba sold between N825 and N870 per litre. Other marketers in the area also maintained higher prices, with Bovas in Ojodu selling at N820 per litre and an NNPC station […]

ICPC has asked Dangote to submit documents and other evidence to back his claims, stressing that anyone who makes accusations must provide proof or leads for investigators to follow. In the petition, submitted on Tuesday through his lawyer, Dangote accuses Farouk Ahmed of corruption, abuse of office, and living far above his means as a public officer. Supreme Court Restores Death Sentence For Maryam Sanda

The Supreme Court of Nigeria has affirmed the death sentence imposed on Maryam Sanda for the murder of her husband, Bilyaminu Bello, and voided the federal government’s decision that had reduced her punishment to 12 years in prison. The court ruled that the executive lacked the constitutional power to alter a final judgment of the Supreme Court in a capital case through prerogative of mercy. In its judgment delivered in Abuja on Friday, the apex court held that the president’s approval of a reduced sentence amounted to an unlawful interference with judicial powers. The justices maintained that once the Supreme Court has given a final decision in a criminal matter, especially one involving the death penalty, that verdict can only be revisited through the court’s own lawful procedures and not by executive action. The court restated that Sanda’s conviction for […]
