ECOWAS leaders push joint action against threats to democracy, rule of law
West African leaders have called for stronger collective action by all ECOWAS member states to tackle growing threats to democracy and the rule of law in the region. Meeting in Abuja, the heads of state and government expressed concern over recent coups, attempted coups and political unrest in countries such as Sierra Leone and Guinea Bissau, warning that unconstitutional changes of government and attacks on institutions risk reversing democratic gains. They urged full implementation and possible strengthening of the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, including tougher measures against military takeovers, manipulation of constitutions and other actions that undermine credible elections and term limits.
