FCT poll: Wike free to back any candidate he wants – APC

The All Progressives Congress has defended Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike’s decision to publicly back its candidates in the FCT Area Council elections, saying he has a constitutional right to support any candidate of his choice. The party dismissed opposition criticism of Wike’s role as misplaced and politically motivated. APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka said on a television programme that Wike, a former Rivers State governor elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, remains a Nigerian citizen whose freedom of association and expression is guaranteed under the 1999 Constitution. He argued that nothing in the law stops the minister from campaigning for candidates in any party. APC’s Danjuma Shekwolo wins Kuje area council chairmanship

All Progressives Congress candidate Danjuma Shekwolo has been declared winner of the Kuje Area Council chairmanship election in the Federal Capital Territory. He secured 17,269 votes to defeat his closest rivals in the poll. Announcing the result, Returning Officer Prof Nkiruka Odoh of the University of Abuja said Shekwolo, having scored the highest number of lawful votes and met all legal requirements, was duly elected and returned as council chairman. The declaration of the Kuje result completes the announcement of winners for chairmanship positions across the six FCT area councils. With this outcome, the APC now controls Kuje along with other councils won in Saturday’s elections.
