NNPP distances itself from Kwankwaso over judges’ visit claim

The New Nigeria People’s Party has distanced itself from former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso over his claim that he took Governor Abba Yusuf to meet some Supreme Court judges in 2019. In a statement by its National Secretary, Oginni Olaposi Sunday, the party said Kwankwaso was not a member of the NNPP at the time the alleged visit took place. It described reports linking the party to the allegation as misleading and asked the Nigerian Bar Association to remove NNPP’s name from any related petition to the Inspector General of Police. The party explained that Kwankwaso only joined the NNPP a few months before the 2023 general elections, alongside Buba Galadima, Prof Rufai Alkali, Senator Suleiman Hunkuyi, Prof Hanga and Abba Yusuf. NNPP also rejected claims that Kwankwaso is a founding member. It stressed that the party was […]

Gov Yusuf quit Kwankwasiya, not NNPP – party founder

Founder of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Dr Boniface Aniebonam, says Kano Governor Abba Yusuf has resigned only from the Kwankwasiya Movement and not from the NNPP itself. He reacted after media reports that Yusuf had dumped the party along with several lawmakers and council chairmen in Kano. Aniebonam argued that the governor’s resignation letter was not addressed to the authentic NNPP National Working Committee (NWC) led by Dr Agbo Major, nor to any recognised party officer. Instead, it was written to a Diso‑Chiranchi Ward chairman who, he said, belongs to the Kwankwasiya Movement and is not recognised by the party’s leadership. He stressed that the NNPP is a registered political party, while Kwankwasiya is merely a former pressure group whose memorandum of association with the NNPP has been terminated. According to him, court judgments from an Abia State […]

Kano Moves to Criminalise Same-Sex Marriage, ‘Immoral Practices’

The Kano State Government has approved the transmission of a bill to the House of Assembly seeking to criminalise same-sex marriage and other practices deemed immoral in the state. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf gave the approval during the 31st Executive Council meeting held at the Government House Annexe in Kwankwasiyya City, according to a statement issued Friday by his spokesperson, Sanusi Dawakin-Tofa. Kano, one of Nigeria’s most populous northern states, operates under Sharia law alongside the Nigerian Constitution. Since the early 2000s, when Sharia was formally introduced, successive administrations have enforced strict regulations on morality, culture, and religion. Nigeria already prohibits same-sex unions under the Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act of 2014, which prescribes up to 14 years in prison. However, northern states like Kano often pursue stricter enforcement aligned with Islamic teachings. The governor emphasised his administration’s resolve to uphold […]
