Tinubu to opposition: Elections not won on social media

President Bola Tinubu has told opposition figures and party supporters that elections are decided by voters in communities, not by debates on social media. He spoke through Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Progressive Governors’ Forum and Renewed Hope Ambassadors Strategic Summit in Abuja. Tinubu urged members of the All Progressives Congress to take government policies and messages directly to wards, markets, campuses and other grassroots areas. He said this face to face engagement is vital for countering misinformation and building trust ahead of the 2027 elections. The President also called for peace within the party in Benue State. He appealed to Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, to reconcile with Governor Hyacinth Alia so that APC leaders in the state can work together on security and development. Tinubu praised Akume’s long public service career and […]

Chairman of the committee, Babajimi Benson, made the call in Abuja as the panel began budget defence sessions with the Ministry of Defence and its agencies. Benson described the exercise as a sacred constitutional duty and a key stage in the appropriation process. He said it provides a platform for rigorous scrutiny, constructive engagement and mutual accountability in the interest of national security. He praised the Armed Forces and security agencies for gains recorded against insurgency, terrorism and other crimes across various theatres of operation. However, he warned that persistent security challenges show the need for deeper reforms, better coordination and smarter use of limited resources. Benson stressed that higher allocations must come with measurable […]

Presidency explains rise in 2026 budget to N58trn

The Presidency says the proposed 2026 federal budget of N58.18 trillion is aimed at consolidating reforms, boosting growth and tackling security and social challenges, not just expanding spending for its own sake. The aggregate expenditure is about six per cent higher than the 2025 estimate of N49.7 trillion, reflecting what officials describe as a more ambitious but targeted fiscal plan. According to presidential officials, the increase is driven mainly by higher allocations to defence, internal security and law enforcement in response to persistent insurgency, banditry and other threats. The 2026 plan earmarks about N5.41 trillion for security related spending, making it one of the largest single components of the budget. The budget also scales up capital investment in infrastructure, including roads, rail, power and public assets needed to support private sector led growth. Government argues that sustained infrastructure funding is […]

Security tops Tinubu’s N58.18trn 2026 budget priorities

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has made security the single biggest priority in the proposed N58.18 trillion 2026 federal budget, earmarking N5.41 trillion for defence and internal security. The allocation is the largest for any sector and marks the third straight year that security has taken the top share of national spending under his administration. Presenting the “Budget of Consolidation, Renewed Resilience and Shared Prosperity” to a joint session of the National Assembly, Tinubu said security remains the foundation of economic growth, investment and social stability. He argued that without peace, efforts to expand jobs, infrastructure, education and health will not succeed. Under the proposal, defence and security will receive N5.41 trillion, ahead of infrastructure (N3.56 trillion), education (N3.52 trillion) and health (N2.48 trillion). The funds are expected to modernise the armed forces, strengthen intelligence driven policing, tighten border security and […]

Tight security as Tinubu heads to NASS to present 2026 budget

Those without proper accreditation are being turned back, although the screening and accreditation process has so far been reported as smooth and without incident. The usual busy atmosphere at the National Assembly has largely disappeared due to the movement restrictions. 2026 Budget Delays Spark Fiscal Spending Concern, Uncertainty

Delays in finalizing Nigeria’s 2026 federal budget and the Medium Term Expenditure and Fiscal Strategy Paper (MTEF/FSP) have heightened market anxiety and cast uncertainty over fiscal spending. With less than two months to the new fiscal year, the Federal Executive Council has yet to approve the budget for National Assembly submission, while the Senate demands comprehensive reports before considering any new proposal. The hold-up, driven by the need to adjust economic frameworks for falling oil prices and missed production targets, has created a ripple effect: MDAs (Ministries, Departments, and Agencies) face worsening funding crises, critical programs remain suspended, and market participants brace for unpredictable government spending. States such as Bayelsa, Cross River, Ekiti, and Osun are moving independently with their own appropriation bills, reflecting deepening uncertainty and divergence in national and subnational fiscal timelines. Analysts warn that ongoing budget delays […]
