Suspect in Charlie Kirk killing to face US court in Utah

Article arrow_drop_down

The suspect accused of killing Charlie Kirk, a prominent conservative activist and founder of Turning Point USA, will be charged in a Utah court on Tuesday, authorities confirmed.

Kirk, a close ally of former President Donald Trump, was shot dead last week during a speaking event on a university campus in Utah.

According to investigators, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson allegedly fired a single shot from a rifle, striking Kirk in the neck from a rooftop vantage point. Robinson was arrested following a 33-hour manhunt.

Kirk, a father of two, had built a large following across TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, where he promoted conservative views and often criticized the transgender rights movement. A polarizing figure, he frequently shared edited clips of his campus debates that amplified his confrontational style.

The FBI’s handling of the case has come under scrutiny. FBI Director Kash Patel initially announced the arrest of a different suspect, only to retract the statement two hours later after the individual was released.

Patel is set to face a Senate panel on Tuesday, where lawmakers are expected to question him on both the Kirk investigation and his broader leadership of the bureau. Appointed by Trump, Patel has drawn criticism from both political camps since assuming the role.

Meanwhile, the White House announced Monday it would intensify efforts to pursue what it described as a left-wing domestic terror movement in the wake of Kirk’s killing. Civil liberties advocates have expressed alarm, warning the campaign could be used to suppress political dissent.
