Van der Sar rates Onana above Raya in world class keepers list

Former Manchester United and Netherlands goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has named André Onana among his small group of world class goalkeepers, placing the Cameroonian ahead of Arsenal’s David Raya in his latest ranking. In his assessment, van der Sar listed six goalkeepers as truly world class at the moment: Alisson Becker, André Onana, Thibaut Courtois, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Manuel Neuer and Emiliano Martínez, praising their consistency at the top level. By contrast, he placed Raya in a second tier of goalkeepers he believes are not yet world class, alongside names like Jan Oblak, Marc André ter Stegen, Yann Sommer, Nick Pope and Jordan Pickford. Van der Sar said he worked with Onana for several years at Ajax and remains convinced of his quality, highlighting his reflexes and ball playing ability, even though he admitted the Manchester United keeper still makes […]

Galatasaray chief denies owing Osimhen, teammates salaries

Galatasaray president Dursun Ozbek has dismissed viral reports claiming that the Turkish club owes Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen and other star players unpaid salaries. He described the stories as misleading and damaging, insisting that Galatasaray has met all its financial obligations to the squad in line with their contracts. Ozbek said it would be impossible for top professionals to keep playing if they were not paid for two or three months, adding that suggesting otherwise insults the players’ professionalism. He stressed that the club has not defaulted “on a single lira” in salary payments and that bonuses and incentive clauses are also settled on time. Club executives also pointed to Galatasaray’s recent financial clearance from UEFA as proof that the team is run on a disciplined payment schedule, with player wages typically paid ahead of usual European timelines. Ozbek urged […]

Seven countries to boycott Paralympics ceremony over Russia

At least seven countries have announced they will boycott the opening ceremony of the 2026 Winter Paralympic Games in Milan Cortina in protest at the participation of Russian athletes under their national flag. The boycott is led by Ukraine, which says allowing Russia and Belarus to compete with full national symbols while the war in Ukraine continues is “unacceptable” and amounts to recognising a “killer state” at a top sports event. Other countries joining the protest include Poland, Finland, Czechia, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, with officials from these nations confirming they will skip the ceremony to show solidarity with Ukraine. The International Paralympic Committee has allocated 10 slots for Russian and Belarusian athletes, who have been cleared to compete under their flags and anthems after earlier bans linked to the invasion of Ukraine. While the boycotting countries still plan to […]

World Cup play off: Super Eagles’ hopes fade as FIFA confirms DRC spot

Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup have suffered a final blow after world football body FIFA confirmed DR Congo as Africa’s representative in the inter confederation play off tournament. In a tournament accreditation notice and subsequent communications, FIFA listed DR Congo among the six teams that will compete in the play off, leaving no space for the Super Eagles, who had challenged their defeat to the Congolese side. Nigeria lost to DR Congo in the intercontinental play off final in Rabat, with the match ending 1–1 in regulation time before the Leopards won 4–3 on penalties to claim Africa’s last slot. The Nigeria Football Federation later petitioned FIFA, alleging that some DR Congo players were ineligible and that competition rules had been breached, but FIFA ruled that all the players were properly registered and cleared to play. Super Falcons eye revenge in second friendly against Cameroon

Nigeria’s Super Falcons are set to face Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses again on Tuesday in Yaounde, aiming to bounce back from a narrow 1–0 defeat in their first pre WAFCON 2026 friendly. Both teams are using the two–match series, played at the Military Stadium in the Cameroonian capital, to fine tune tactics and assess players ahead of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. In Saturday’s opener, the Falcons created several chances but were undone by a late goal, leaving head coach Justin Madugu and his players determined to respond with a stronger performance in the second game. Madugu is expected to tweak his line up and possibly adjust formations, with second half substitutes such as Joy Omewa, Precious Christopher, Folashade Ijamilusi, Esther Onyenezide and Michelle Alozie all pushing for starting roles after bright cameos. NFF officials say the matches […]

UEFA sanctions Tottenham over fans’ Nazi gestures in Champions League tie

UEFA has sanctioned Tottenham Hotspur after three of the club’s supporters were found to have made Nazi style salutes during a Champions League away match against Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany. The European football body fined Spurs 30,000 euros for racist and discriminatory behaviour and imposed a suspended one match ban on selling away tickets in UEFA competitions. The away ticket ban will only take effect if there is a repeat offence within a one year probationary period, meaning it does not affect Tottenham’s upcoming last 16 trip to face Atletico Madrid. UEFA also issued a separate 2,250 euro fine after some Spurs supporters were found to have thrown objects during the 2–0 win at Deutsche Bank Park on January 28. Tottenham said it fully cooperated with UEFA’s investigation, as well as with German police and the Metropolitan Police, and condemned […]

Ronaldo jets out of Saudi Arabia to Madrid as US–Iran conflict escalates

Al Nassr superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has left Saudi Arabia for Madrid amid escalating US–Iran tensions and drone attacks that have hit targets in the kingdom and across the Gulf. Flight tracking data showed his Bombardier Global Express private jet departing Riyadh on Monday night and landing in the Spanish capital after a roughly seven hour flight over Egypt and the Mediterranean. His departure came hours after Iranian drones struck the US embassy compound in Riyadh, part of a wider wave of retaliatory missile and drone attacks across the region following the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in US–Israeli strikes. Reports say Ronaldo left with his partner Georgina Rodriguez and their children, as many foreign nationals and celebrities seek to temporarily relocate from frontline Gulf states over security concerns. The Asian Football Confederation has already suspended several West […]
