S&P Global Ratings has upgraded Nigeria’s long-term foreign and local currency sovereign credit ratings to ‘B’ from ‘B-’, in what marks the country’s first ratings upgrade by the agency in about 14 years. The outlook on the ratings is stable, while the short-term sovereign ratings were affirmed at ‘B’.
In its latest review, S&P said Nigeria’s creditworthiness has improved on the back of President Bola Tinubu’s sustained economic reforms, including FX market liberalisation, subsidy removal and efforts to boost non-oil revenues. The agency noted that the unification and flexibilisation of the exchange rate have bolstered access to foreign currency and supported a more market-driven FX environment.
S&P also cited recovering oil production, higher fiscal revenues and rising external reserves as key factors behind the upgrade. It pointed to improved external buffers helped by better FX liquidity, inflows from multilateral lenders and expanding domestic refining capacity, particularly with the ramp-up of the Dangote refinery.
The report acknowledged that Nigeria still faces significant challenges, including high inflation, security concerns and implementation risks around reforms. However, it stressed that if current policies are sustained, they could strengthen growth prospects and further stabilise public finances over the medium term.
Local analysts say the upgrade is a positive signal for foreign investors and could help reduce Nigeria’s borrowing costs on international markets. It also follows S&P’s earlier decision in 2025 to revise Nigeria’s outlook to positive from stable while keeping the rating at ‘B-/B’, based on early reform momentum.

Over time, friendship blossomed into love, and she eventually became not only his wife but also his stage partner and manager, working closely with him on tours and recordings. According to her, some friends and relatives initially questioned the decision to marry a man much older and already an established star. However, she said their relationship was built on mutual respect, genuine affection and a shared […]

O’Neill: Iheanacho has been terrific
Celtic manager Martin O’Neill has described Super Eagles striker Kelechi Iheanacho as “terrific” following a string of decisive performances in the Scottish Premiership title race. The Nigerian forward has come up big for the Hoops in recent weeks, scoring late winners and crucial goals despite limited minutes and earlier injury problems. Iheanacho grabbed the headlines with a dramatic 99th-minute penalty in Celtic’s 3–2 victory over Motherwell at Fir Park, keeping their championship hopes alive heading into the final day. Before that, he netted the match-winner in a 2–1 win over Hibernian, taking his tally to four goals in his last five appearances across all competitions. “Iheanacho has been terrific for us with the little cameo roles that he’s done,” O’Neill told BBC Scotland after the Motherwell game. “He’s had a really frustrating time this season with hamstring problems, but he […]

Arbeloa: I’ll be happy if Mourinho returns as Real Madrid coach
Real Madrid coach Álvaro Arbeloa has said he would be happy if his former manager José Mourinho returned to the Bernabéu amid intense speculation linking the Portuguese tactician with the job. Reports in Spain and Portugal claim club president Florentino Pérez is seriously considering bringing back Mourinho as head coach after a trophyless season. According to Spanish outlet The Objective, one scenario being explored would see Mourinho installed as first-team manager with Arbeloa staying on as his assistant, effectively recreating their close relationship from the early 2010s. Sources close to the former right-back say he is open to such an arrangement and “would not mind” working under his old boss if it benefits the club. Speaking recently about the rumours, Arbeloa brushed aside any suggestion that he feels threatened by Mourinho’s possible return. He has consistently described the Benfica coach […]

Tambuwal: ADC structure not built for Atiku, defends coalition exits
Former Sokoto State governor and Sokoto South senator, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has said the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is not a party whose structure was built for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar or any single politician. Speaking on a Channels Television programme, he dismissed claims that the ADC had been hijacked to serve Atiku’s presidential ambition ahead of 2027. Tambuwal explained that the ADC’s ongoing coalition arrangements were designed as a broader platform for opposition forces, not a personal vehicle for Atiku. He insisted that decisions within the party are taken collectively by its organs and leaders, including chairman David Mark and other stakeholders, rather than being dictated by one individual. Reacting to the exit of key figures like Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso from the coalition, Tambuwal said their decisions were “personal choices” and not evidence of a crisis […]

DHQ details slain ISIS Al‑Minuki’s decade‑long terror network
Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has given fresh details about the decade‑long terror network run by slain Islamic State commander Abu‑Bilal Al‑Minuki, also known as Abu‑Mainok. The senior ISIS figure was confirmed killed this week in a joint Nigerian–US operation targeting his compound in the Lake Chad Basin. According to military and diplomatic briefings, Al‑Minuki had been on the radar of Western and African intelligence services for years as a key architect of ISIS’ expansion into West and Central Africa. Sanctioned by the United States in 2023, he was accused of coordinating funding, training and logistics for Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) cells operating around Lake Chad and deep into the Sahel. DHQ assessments link Al‑Minuki to a web of attacks on military bases, ambushes on convoys, mass kidnappings and cross‑border raids in Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon over the […]

ICPC blocked El‑Rufai’s doctor, wife from seeing him — Son alleges
Mohammed Bello, son of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El‑Rufai, has alleged that operatives of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) blocked his father’s personal doctor and wife from seeing him in custody. El‑Rufai is currently being held at the ICPC facility in Abuja on the orders of a court over an ongoing corruption trial. In a statement shared on social media, Bello claimed that the ex‑governor’s personal doctor arrived at the ICPC office around 3pm on Thursday to discuss the results of recent medical tests but was turned back by officials. “Officials at the agency blocked the doctor from seeing him, claiming that written permission from the ICPC Chairman was required,” he wrote, describing the move as a direct violation of a court order granting his father unrestricted access to his doctors. He further alleged […]

President Bola Tinubu has confirmed that a senior leader of the Islamic State group was killed in Nigeria during a joint counter‑terrorism operation conducted by Nigerian forces and the United States military. In a statement issued from Abuja, he described the overnight mission as a “significant example of effective collaboration in the fight against terrorism.” Tinubu said the operation targeted a compound in the Lake Chad Basin that intelligence services had identified as a base used by ISIS figures to plan and coordinate attacks. “Our determined Nigerian Armed Forces, working closely with the Armed Forces of the United States, conducted a daring joint operation that dealt a heavy blow to the ranks of the Islamic State,” he noted. Early assessments, according to the president, confirm the elimination of Abu‑Bilal Al‑Manuki, also known as Abu‑Mainok, who has been described by US […]

Fierce lobbying, tension as APC primaries begin
Intense lobbying and growing tension have greeted the All Progressives Congress’ nationwide primaries as the ruling party begins the process of selecting its candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections. The primaries, which kicked off with House of Representatives contests, have already exposed fresh cracks in several state chapters. In many states, aspirants and their supporters are said to be locked in last-minute meetings with governors, ministers and other power brokers in a bid to secure party tickets. Reports indicate that hotel lobbies in Abuja and major state capitals are now packed with politicians seeking endorsements, funding and favourable word from key stakeholders. Consensus talks reportedly collapsed in a number of states on Thursday night after rival camps rejected attempts by party leaders to impose “unity candidates”. In some areas, aggrieved aspirants have threatened legal action or defection if they […]

Tambuwal steps down from Senate race, backs ex-commissioner
Former Governor of Sokoto State, Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has stepped down from the 2027 Sokoto South Senatorial race. The ex-speaker confirmed he would no longer seek re-election to the Senate, despite earlier indications that he would be on the ballot. Tambuwal, who recently resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party and aligned with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has instead thrown his weight behind former commissioner Aminu Bala Bodinga. Bodinga, a long-time ally, served in Tambuwal’s cabinet during his time as governor and is now being positioned as his preferred successor for the Sokoto South seat. In a message shared by his media team, Tambuwal said his decision followed wide consultations with political associates and constituents. He explained that he chose to step aside to allow “fresh energy” to emerge, while still offering guidance and support from behind the scenes. […]
