Winfried Schäfer: “I Came to Save Ghana Football from Crisis”

Article arrow_drop_down

Veteran German coach Winfried Schäfer has declared his mission to rescue Ghanaian football from its current crisis, following the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Appointed as Technical Advisor and Director of Football, Schäfer aims to restore unity and implement sustainable development within the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

AFCON 2025: A National Setback
Ghana’s absence from the upcoming AFCON marks the first time in two decades the nation will miss the continental tournament. The Black Stars finished at the bottom of their qualifying group, recording three draws and three defeats. Schäfer described this outcome as a “catastrophe” for Ghanaian football.

Schäfer’s Vision for Revival
With over 40 years of coaching experience, including leading Cameroon to the 2002 AFCON title, Schäfer brings a wealth of knowledge to his new role. He emphasizes the need for sustainable football projects and is actively seeking international partnerships to support Ghana’s football development.

Early Signs of Progress
Despite the recent setbacks, the Black Stars have shown improvement under Schäfer’s guidance, securing back-to-back victories against Chad and Madagascar in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The team is set to participate in a four-nation tournament in the UK later this month, aiming to build momentum ahead of crucial qualifiers against Chad and Mali in September.

Arbeloa told me I’ve been demoted to fourth striker – Mbappé

Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé has claimed that head coach Álvaro Arbeloa told him he is now only the fourth-choice striker at the club. The France captain made the remark after starting on the bench in Los Blancos’ 2–0 La Liga win over Real Oviedo at the Santiago Bernabéu. Mbappé, who recently returned from a hamstring injury, insisted he was fully fit and ready to start the match. “I’m 100% fine. I didn’t play because, for the coach, I’ve been the fourth-choice striker behind (Franco) Mastantuono, Vini and Gonzalo,” he told reporters in the mixed zone. Man City battle fatigue ahead of FA Cup final clash with troubled Chelsea

Pep Guardiola says Manchester City are battling mounting fatigue as they prepare to face a troubled Chelsea side in Saturday’s FA Cup final at Wembley. City are chasing a domestic cup double while still locked in a tight Premier League title race with Arsenal, leaving the squad stretched by a relentless schedule. Guardiola’s men were in league action as recently as Wednesday, when they beat Crystal Palace 3–0 to close the gap on Arsenal to two points with two games remaining. In contrast, Chelsea have had a full week to rest and train at Cobham, a gap the City boss believes could hand the London club a physical edge at Wembley. “After the FA Cup, we have Bournemouth, we play every three days. Chelsea have a week at home training, preparing the final,” Guardiola said. “We have to travel to […]
