Article arrow_drop_down

As President Bola Tinubu’s administration marks two years in office, the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has been singled out for praise by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State.

In a statement issued Thursday in Abuja, APC spokesman Comrade Darlington Nwauju described Tunji-Ojo as a model public servant whose performance has “set benchmarks that make Nigeria’s younger generation proud.”

Nwauju highlighted the minister’s achievements, including the promotion of more than 100,000 officers across paramilitary agencies, reforms in correctional centers, and initiatives to improve inmate welfare and rehabilitation. These include the establishment of furniture, leather, and shoe factories in prisons, as well as the release of over 4,000 inmates through ₦585 million raised from corporate organizations.

Tunji-Ojo was also credited with clearing a 200,000-passport backlog, introducing contactless biometric passports, setting up enhanced e-passport centers abroad, and creating a national command-and-control center for immigration.

Other milestones cited include the remodeling of the Fire Service Academy, the creation of the Civil Defence Mining Marshal—credited with raising mining revenues from ₦6 billion to ₦48 billion—and the founding of a paramilitary academy. Recently, the minister secured presidential approval to recruit 30,000 Nigerians into paramilitary services.

“Dr. Tunji-Ojo has shattered glass ceilings within two years, delivering reforms with accountability and compassion. His work is a clear reflection of President Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda,” Nwauju said.

Ukraine battles economic pressure amid war

Maintaining financial strength is not only essential for sustaining the war effort today but also for securing the country’s long-term future. According to Sergii Marchenko, Ukraine’s finance minister, Kyiv aims to emerge from the conflict as a strong partner for Europe rather than a struggling neighbour. He believes the country’s hard-earned military experience since the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022 could eventually help strengthen Europe’s defence capabilities. Joining the European Union remains a major goal for Ukraine. Financial support from the bloc has played a key role in keeping the economy functioning while bringing the country closer to European integration. A newly approved €90bn loan from the EU is expected to help cover Ukraine’s budget gap over the next two years. […]
