Pope Francis dead at 88 Vatican reports

Article arrow_drop_down

The first Latin American leader of the Roman Catholic Church, died at the age of 88 on Monday.

He had suffered various ailments in his 12-year papacy, with severe complications in recent weeks.

Francis became pope in 2013. In recent years, the 88-year-old was forced to cancel some events, sometimes at the last minute, because of his health.

In the statement, the Vatican announced that Pope Francis died on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88 at his residence in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta. At 9:45 AM [Vatican time +2hrs GMT]], Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber, announced the death of Pope Francis from the Casa Santa Marta with these words:

Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow, I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7:35am [Vatican time +2hrs GMT] this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of His Church. He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage, and universal love, especially in favour of the poorest and most marginalised. With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God.”The Pope was admitted to the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital on Friday, February 14, 2025, after suffering from a bout of bronchitis for several days.

Pope Francis’ clinical situation gradually worsened, and his doctors diagnosed bilateral pneumonia on Tuesday, February 18.After 38 days in hospital, the late Pope returned to his Vatican residence at the Casa Santa Marta to continue his recovery. In 1957, in his early 20s, Jorge Mario Bergoglio underwent surgery in his native Argentina to remove a portion of his lung that had been affected by a severe respiratory infection. As he aged, Pope Francis frequently suffered bouts of respiratory illnesses, even cancelling a planned visit to the United Arab Emirates in November 2023 due to influenza and lung inflammation.

In April 2024, the late Pope Francis approved an updated edition of the liturgical book for papal funeral rites, which will guide the funeral Mass which has yet to be announced. The second edition of the Ordo Exsequiarum Romani Pontificis introduces several new elements, including how the Pope’s mortal remains are to be handled after death. The ascertainment of death takes place in the chapel, rather than in the room where he died, and his body is immediately placed inside the coffin.

According to Archbishop Diego Ravelli, Master of Apostolic Ceremonies, the late Pope Francis had requested that the funeral rites be simplified and focused on expressing the faith of the Church in the Risen Body of Christ.

“The renewed rite,” said Archbishop Ravelli, “seeks to emphasise even more that the funeral of the Roman Pontiff is that of a pastor and disciple of Christ and not of a powerful person of this world.”

ECG Explains Power Outages in Greater Accra and Western Regions Following Technical Faults

According to Alex King Nartey of the Ghana National Fire Service's communications team, three people have so far been rescued from the scene and are currently receiving medical treatment. However, emergency responders fear that at least three more individuals may still be trapped under the debris. He disclosed that the Fire Service has requested assistance from the military, while the Mayor of Accra has also facilitated the deployment of heavy machinery to support the […]

Equatorial Guinea President’s Nephew Jailed for Embezzlement

A nephew of Equatorial Guinea’s President Teodoro Obiang Nguema, Baltasar Ebang Engonga, has been sentenced to eight years in prison for embezzlement, marking a dramatic fall from grace for the once-powerful official. Engonga, nicknamed “Bello” for his good looks, was the former head of the National Financial Investigation Agency. A court ruled that he had diverted public funds for personal use, alongside five other officials who allegedly misappropriated money meant for travel allowances ranging from $9,000 to $220,000. His case drew international attention last year when sex tapes allegedly involving him were leaked online. The scandal erupted while he was in detention on charges of funneling millions into secret offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands. Many of the leaked videos appeared to show him with women connected to the country’s political elite, further fuelling controversy. The videos’ authenticity was never […]

Ilorin Islamic Cleric Sentenced to Death for Ritual Student Murder

The Kwara State High Court in Ilorin has sentenced Islamic cleric Abdulrahman Mohad (also known as Mohammed A. Bello) to death by hanging for the ritual murder of Hafsoh Lawal Yetunde, a final-year student at the Kwara State College of Education. The victim, aged 24, disappeared after answering a phone call during a naming ceremony on February 10, 2025, and was later found dead—having been killed and dismembered for ritual purposes. Investigators traced the last call on her phone to Mohad, who confessed to belonging to an occult group and carrying out the crime. The presiding judge, Justice Hannah Ajayi, condemned the act as an extreme case of human wickedness and rejected Mohad’s defense claims as fabricated. Four co-defendants were acquitted due to insufficient evidence linking them to the offense. This ruling represents a rare execution-level conviction in Nigeria, underscoring […]
