Police have arrested about 50 people in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State, after a protest over rising kidnapping turned violent. The demonstration, which began on Saturday as a peaceful march against insecurity, later saw bonfires and the blocking of major roads, including the Benin Abuja highway.
The Edo State Police Command said hoodlums hijacked the protest and were involved in looting, vandalising shops and attacking traders. A police statement added that extra tactical teams were deployed to restore order and prevent further damage.
During the unrest, a soldier allegedly shot and injured a 32 year old man, identified as Osagie Abraham, who is now receiving treatment at Eromoele Medical Centre, Ekpoma. The officer has been identified and reported to the relevant military authorities for disciplinary action, according to the police.
Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika said citizens have the right to protest but must do so peacefully without infringing on the rights and safety of others. He also promised stronger, intelligence led operations and patrols to tackle kidnapping and other crimes in Ekpoma and across Edo State.
