Obi: Nigeria Has Become a Crime Scene
Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate , has called Nigeria a “crime scene” after a Senate audit revealed ₦210 trillion in financial irregularities at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) between 2017 and 2023 .
He made the remarks in a statement released on Friday , describing the findings as shocking and unacceptable.
“This is not just another scandal,” he said.
“It’s a clear and damning confirmation that Nigeria is being held hostage by corruption.”
₦210 Trillion Missing – Obi
The Senate audit report showed:
- ₦103 trillion in questionable ‘accrued expenses’
- ₦107 trillion in unaccounted ‘receivables’
Obi pointed out that Nigeria’s total national budget during the same period was only ₦88.01 trillion —less than half of what went missing from NNPC.
“That means the amount lost or misused at NNPC is more than twice our entire national budget,” he said.
He described this as a criminal betrayal of Nigerians , warning it puts the future of the country at risk.
“This is governance gone wrong. It must be stopped and dismantled.”
“This Threatens Our Children’s Future” – Obi Warns
Obi said the scale of financial abuse within such a critical institution shows how deep corruption runs in Nigeria.
“Nigeria cannot keep functioning like this. We must confront the truth.”
He urged leaders to act immediately to restore accountability and transparency.
“We cannot allow this system to continue unchecked. We owe better to the next generation.”

According to him, these pledges are already translating into concrete projects that will create jobs and boost productivity. The President noted that his government’s decision to unify the exchange rate, phase out fuel subsidies and streamline business regulations has sent a strong signal to the international community. He maintained that while the reforms have been painful in the short term, they are necessary to reposition Nigeria for long-term, private sector–driven growth. Dangote exports 1.66bn litres fuel amid US–Iran tensions
Dangote Petroleum Refinery has exported an estimated 1.66 billion litres of refined fuel products in April 2026 as global energy markets reel from the impact of the US–Iran war. The record export volume came as buyers in Africa, Europe and other regions scrambled for alternative supplies amid fears of disruptions to traditional shipping routes in the Middle East. Industry reports show that the refinery, Africa’s largest with a nameplate capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, has ramped up shipments of diesel, petrol and jet fuel in recent months. The April figure alone represents a sharp jump compared to earlier months, with exports of aviation fuel rising to an average of about 160,000 barrels per day at the height of the crisis. Analysts say the surge in exports underscores Dangote’s growing role as a stabilising force in regional fuel supply, helping […]
