More than 15,000 people have taken to the streets in Israel demanding an end to the war in Gaza and urging Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to agree to a deal to free the remaining hostages. Families of hostages joined supporters in Jerusalem’s Paris Square, while large crowds also gathered in Tel Aviv.
Of the 48 hostages still believed to be in Gaza, around 20 are thought to be alive. Israel has not formally responded to a proposed deal for their release and has maintained its position that all hostages must be freed in any agreement. Netanyahu has argued that total victory over Hamas will bring them home.
Hamas abducted 251 people during its October 7, 2023 attack on southern Israel, which left about 1,200 people dead. Israel responded with a massive military campaign to dismantle Hamas, resulting in at least 64,368 Palestinian deaths, according to figures from the Hamas-run health ministry that the UN considers credible, though Israel disputes them.
Despite growing protests within Israel and mounting international pressure to halt the offensive, the government shows no signs of backing down. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) is reportedly preparing for a larger ground incursion aimed at gaining full control of Gaza. Defence Minister Israel Katz has openly warned of further destruction, insisting Hamas facilities must be eliminated.
Protesters, including parents of hostages, warned that expanding the war will put their loved ones in greater danger. From Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, speakers called on Netanyahu to strike a deal before more lives are lost. Yet the prime minister and his cabinet remain defiant, dismissing accusations of pursuing a scorched-earth policy even as Gaza’s humanitarian crisis worsens.
