Graham Greene, the groundbreaking Indigenous actor best known for his Oscar-nominated role as Kicking Bird in Dances with Wolves, has died at the age of 73.
Greene passed away Monday in Stratford, Ontario, after a long battle with an undisclosed illness, according to Variety.
Born in 1952 on Canada’s Six Nations Reserve, Greene worked in various trades before beginning his acting career in the late 1970s. He rose to prominence in 1990 with Dances with Wolves, earning an Academy Award nomination. He went on to deliver acclaimed performances in films such as The Green Mile, Maverick, Die Hard with a Vengeance, Wind River, and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2.
Greene also left a deep mark on television, appearing in Reservation Dogs, 1883, The Last of Us, and Tulsa King. His Grammy-winning work on Listen to the Storyteller and his role as Chief Rains Fall in Red Dead Redemption 2 further underscored his versatility.
Tributes poured in across Hollywood and beyond. Kevin Costner remembered him as “a master at work and a wonderful human being.” Actress Lily Gladstone praised him as “one of the best to ever do it,” while Reservation Dogs star D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai called him a mentor and trailblazer for Indigenous actors.
Greene is survived by his wife, Hilary Blackmore, and daughter Lilly Lazare-Greene.

A shocking audit report has uncovered a massive payroll scandal involving a senior government official who allegedly received over GHS427 million in unearned salaries over 29 months.
