Actress and filmmaker Omotola Jalade Ekeinde has shared how the EndSARS protests changed her approach to activism after her children received death threats. She spoke about the experience during an interview on Channels Television’s Rubbin Minds.
Omotola said she had been used to receiving death threats in the past, but the intensity during the EndSARS protests was different. According to her, the situation became more frightening when her children also started getting death threats.
She explained that the threats made her realise the risks were no longer about her alone. The experience forced her to reassess her safety and that of her family and to shift from street protests to more targeted advocacy.
Omotola revealed that people even came to her home and workplace looking for her at the height of the tension. She said that was when she knew she had to think beyond herself and focus on protecting her children.
The actress stressed that she is less worried about her own life now and more concerned about her children’s safety. She noted that she cannot control where they go or fully protect them, so she must be cautious in how she speaks out.
The EndSARS movement, which began in October 2020, was a nationwide protest against police brutality and abuses by the Special Anti Robbery Squad SARS. Omotola’s comments highlight the personal cost some public figures and their families faced during the demonstrations.
