Dangote refinery row forces regulators to resign

The Nigerian oil and gas industry has been thrown into uncertainty following the resignation of the chief executives of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, NUPRC, Engr Gbenga Komolafe, and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, NMDPRA, Engr Farouk Ahmed. Both NUPRC and NMDPRA are responsible for enforcing petroleum laws, regulations and guidelines in the upstream and downstream sectors. Komolafe and Ahmed were appointed in September 2021 by former President Muhammadu Buhari after the Petroleum Industry Act, PIA, came into force and had been reporting directly to President Bola Tinubu, who is also the Petroleum Minister, until their resignations. Farouk Ahmed’s exit follows his recent clash with industrialist Aliko Dangote, who petitioned the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, over alleged misconduct. Dangote accused the NMDPRA leadership of economic sabotage, claiming that its policies were […]

Tinted glass permit: IGP warns police against extortion, rights abuse

The Nigeria Police Force has restated plans to resume full enforcement of the tinted glass permit policy from 2 January 2026, citing rising criminal activities involving vehicles with unlawfully tinted windows. However, Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has cautioned personnel that the operation must not become an avenue for intimidation, extortion or other misconduct. In an internal communication circulated on 15 December 2025, the police high command directed all formations to prepare for nationwide checks on vehicles with tinted glass. The memo emphasised that officers must act within the law, treat motorists with respect and avoid any behaviour that could undermine public trust. The police clarified that the earlier suspension of tinted glass permit enforcement was an administrative decision and not the result of any court order. The Force said there is currently no judicial ruling stopping it from implementing […]

Dangote refinery price cut triggers brutal petrol war, heavy losses for importers and marketers

Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector is in the middle of what operators describe as an intense price war following the decision by the Dangote Petroleum Refinery to sharply reduce its gantry price for Premium Motor Spirit from N828 to N699 per litre. The move has forced fuel importers, depot owners and retail marketers to cut prices aggressively, even as the refinery admits it is also losing money under the new price regime. Estimates based on consumption and supply data suggest that petrol importers could lose about N102.48bn every month if they match Dangote’s prices. With the refinery now selling N129 per litre cheaper than the prevailing import landing cost, analysts say depot owners who offload cargo at Dangote-level prices would be taking a loss of about N129 on every litre sold, amounting to roughly N3.41bn daily. Dangote Refinery itself is projected […]

FRSC moves to prosecute TikToker Peller for alleged reckless driving

The Federal Road Safety Corps has announced plans to prosecute popular TikTok streamer Habeeb Hamzat, widely known as Peller, following a road traffic crash linked to alleged distracted driving. The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, said the case reflects a worrying rise in irresponsible road use among celebrities, influencers and content creators, which he warned threatens public safety and undermines national road safety campaigns. The decision followed the circulation of a viral video showing Peller live streaming while driving shortly before the crash. Mohammed described the conduct as unlawful and dangerous, stressing that social media fame does not place anyone above traffic regulations or shield them from legal consequences. In a statement signed by FRSC spokesperson Olusegun Ogungbemide, the corps marshal said the incident should serve as a stark reminder that reckless behaviour on public roads can easily lead to loss […]

Dangote targets N739 per litre petrol as refinery cuts depot price

MRS and other partners of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery are expected to start selling petrol at N739 per litre, following a fresh reduction in the refinery’s depot price. The move comes two days after the refinery slashed its petrol gantry price from N828 to N699 per litre, a cut of about N129 per litre. Speaking at a press briefing at the Lekki refinery, Dangote Group President, Aliko Dangote, said he was aware that some filling stations keep pump prices high despite lower depot prices. He accused some marketers of undermining his efforts by refusing to pass on the reductions to consumers. Dangote said MRS would commence sales at N739 per litre from Tuesday in Lagos, while other partner stations would follow across the country. He insisted that the current prices of around N900 to N970 per litre at some outlets […]

NAF aircraft in Burkina Faso was on ferry mission, not covert operation

A senior Nigerian military source has dismissed claims that a Nigerian Air Force aircraft was on a clandestine mission in Burkina Faso. The source explained that the C-130 transport plane was on a scheduled ferry mission to Portugal when it made an emergency diversion to Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, after the crew noticed a technical issue. According to the source, the diversion followed standard aviation safety procedures and was not linked to any combat, intelligence, or political operation in Burkina Faso or the wider Sahel region. The aircraft reportedly headed to the nearest suitable airfield to ensure the safety of the crew and passengers, in line with international aviation protocols. The Nigerian Air Force has also clarified in earlier statements that Burkina Faso did not ground the aircraft but received it after the precautionary landing. The crew and the other Nigerian […]
