In a statement issued on Thursday by his media aide, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ordered an immediate boost in security operations in Borno to prevent further attacks and ensure those behind the bombing are arrested. He explained that additional tactical security teams are being deployed to the Gamboru Market area of Maiduguri to track and apprehend the perpetrators of the terror attack. Tinubu can’t unilaterally suspend tax law, Oyedele insists as lawyers push back

Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Taiwo Oyedele, says President Bola Tinubu and the executive arm have no constitutional power to suspend implementation of the new tax reform laws despite the controversy over alleged alterations. He argued that once a bill has been duly passed by the National Assembly, signed by the president and gazetted, it becomes an Act that can only be amended or repealed by parliament, not frozen by executive order. Oyedele also clarified that the reforms comprise four separate tax laws, two of which came into effect immediately upon assent, while the remaining two are scheduled to commence on January 1, 2026. He maintained that the disputed “multiple tax” regulations circulating online are fake and urged Nigerians to allow lawmakers conclude their investigation into alleged errors in the gazetted texts. However, several senior […]

Ndume urges Tinubu to suspend contested tax laws, order probe

Former Senate Leader Mohammed Ali Ndume has called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the growing controversy over Nigeria’s new Tax Reform Acts by suspending their planned January implementation. He said the president should not allow the laws to take off while serious questions remain about the authenticity of the version he assented to. Ndume noted that opposition leaders, civil society groups and the Nigerian Bar Association have all raised alarms about alleged alterations between the bills passed by the National Assembly and the gazetted laws. NBA President Afam Osigwe warned that the discrepancies threaten the integrity and credibility of the country’s legislative process and strike at the heart of constitutional governance. The controversy deepened after House of Representatives member Abdussamad Dasuki drew attention to suspected changes in the tax texts. Dasuki said the version published by the Federal […]

Power minister promises quick restoration of electricity supply

Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu has assured Nigerians that electricity supply will be rapidly restored after a sharp nationwide drop in power in recent days. He said the disruption is temporary and linked to a sudden shortfall in generation caused by damage to critical gas infrastructure. According to the minister, the decline followed an explosion on the Escravos–Lagos Gas Pipeline and acts of vandalism on other gas facilities feeding several major thermal power plants. These incidents cut gas supply, forcing many gas fired stations to reduce output and leading to reduced power on the national grid. Adelabu spoke after a meeting with key sector stakeholders, including the National Independent System Operator, Transmission Company of Nigeria, generation companies and distribution companies. He said repairs to the affected pipelines are nearing completion and that full operations are expected to resume within 24 […]

NBA, Atiku demand suspension of ‘altered’ tax laws

The Nigerian Bar Association and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar have called for the immediate suspension of implementation of Nigeria’s new tax reform laws over alleged alterations in the gazetted version. They raised alarm that sections of the laws appear different from what was debated and passed by the National Assembly, describing the situation as a grave constitutional breach. Atiku, in a detailed statement, described the alleged post passage changes as a “brazen act of treason” and “direct assault” on Nigeria’s constitutional democracy. He warned that inserting new coercive powers for tax authorities after legislative approval undermines the principle that only parliament can make or amend laws. The former vice president listed provisions he considers unconstitutional, including powers for tax officials to arrest, seize property and conduct enforcement sales without court orders. He argued that these turn tax collectors into […]
