Dangote refinery will make Nigeria net fuel exporter – Shettima

Vice President Kashim Shettima says the Dangote Refinery is positioning Nigeria to become a net exporter of refined petroleum products after decades as a net importer of value. Speaking at a High level Accra Reset Initiative meeting on the sidelines of the 2026 World Economic Forum in Davos, he said Africa’s prosperity must be homegrown, built on innovation, industry and interdependence rather than external aid. Shettima cited the Lagos based Dangote Refinery as proof of what happens “when African capital meets industrial ambition,” noting that it is gradually turning Nigeria into a major exporter of fuel. He argued that matching production with infrastructure and clear policies can move nations from being price takers to value makers in global markets. According to him, only by building domestic productive capacity can African countries convert their large populations and natural endowments into real, […]

Rivers Chief Judge rejects impeachment request over court orders

The Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Chibuzor Simeon Amadi, has declined a request by the Rivers State House of Assembly to set up a seven member panel to probe Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof Ngozi Odu, over alleged gross misconduct. In a leaked response letter, he said his hands were tied by subsisting interim injunctions issued by a High Court on 16 January 2026 in two separate suits filed by the governor and his deputy. The court orders expressly barred the Chief Judge from receiving, processing, considering or acting on any impeachment related request or communication from the Assembly pending further hearing of the cases. Amadi noted that he was listed as the 32nd defendant in the suits and confirmed that the interim orders had been duly served on his office. He stressed the supremacy of constitutionalism […]

Owerri Catholic Bishops decry hardship, demand better welfare

Catholic Bishops of the Owerri Ecclesiastical Province have raised concern over the soaring prices of goods and essential commodities, warning that life is becoming increasingly unaffordable for ordinary Nigerians. In a communiqué issued after a two day meeting in Owerri, they said economic instability is worsening hardship for families, workers and pensioners. The bishops noted that the rising cost of living is forcing children out of school, increasing dependency and discouraging young entrepreneurs and artisans from starting businesses. While acknowledging slight reductions in a few commodity prices, they urged government and citizens to act decisively to stop the economy from sliding into deeper crisis. They also lamented the plight of workers and retirees, citing delayed salaries, unpaid pensions and poor living conditions. Describing work as a sacred duty that expresses human dignity, they called on public and private employers to ensure just […]

Supreme Court ends Kudirat Abiola murder case against Al Mustapha

The Supreme Court has dismissed the case seeking to revive the murder trial of Major Hamza Al Mustapha over the killing of Kudirat Abiola, wife of the acclaimed winner of the 1993 presidential election. The apex court held that Lagos State had abandoned the matter after failing to take any steps since 2014. Kudirat Abiola was assassinated in Lagos on June 4, 1996, during nationwide protests against the annulment of her husband MKO Abiola’s election victory. Al Mustapha, then Chief Security Officer to the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, was charged alongside Mohammed Abacha and Lateef Shofolahan on counts of conspiracy and murder. In January 2012, a Lagos High Court convicted the defendants and sentenced them to death by hanging. However, the Court of Appeal in July 2013 overturned the judgment, discharged and acquitted them, ruling that the […]

FCCPC moves against non compliant digital lenders

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission has begun phased enforcement against digital money lenders that failed to comply with the 2025 Digital, Electronic, Online and Non Traditional Consumer Lending Regulations. Operators were given until January 5, 2026 to regularise their operations. In a statement, Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Tunji Bello said the compliance window has closed and enforcement has started in a fair and orderly manner. He explained that the move is to give full effect to the new rules and ensure regulatory certainty in Nigeria’s digital lending market. The Commission has withdrawn conditional approvals earlier granted to some lenders that did not complete their regularisation within the transition period. These operators have now been removed from the FCCPC’s public register of approved digital lenders until they fully meet all requirements. Bello said the register is […]
