A Department of State Services investigator has told the Federal High Court in Abuja that several victims rescued from the 2022 Abuja Kaduna train attack submitted written complaints against alleged terrorist negotiator Tukur Mamu. The operative, who testified as the sixth prosecution witness and gave evidence behind a screen for security reasons, made the disclosure while being cross examined by Mamu’s lead counsel, Johnson Usman, SAN. Asked if any of the rescued victims, including the wife of the Commandant in Jaji, lodged complaints against Mamu, he replied in the affirmative and confirmed the complaints were in writing. DSS lawyer David Kaswe urged the court to stop the defence from asking questions that might reveal the identities of victims or witnesses, reminding the court that an order for their protection had been granted. NAFDAC clarifies sachet alcohol ban, says no company shut

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has clarified that it has not shut down any alcohol producing company while enforcing the ban on alcoholic drinks in sachets and small containers below 200 millilitres. The agency said the enforcement, backed by a recent Senate resolution and the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, is aimed at protecting public health, especially children, adolescents and young adults, from harmful alcohol use. NAFDAC Director General, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, explained that the action targets only alcohol packaged in sachets and containers smaller than 200ml, not manufacturers themselves. “NAFDAC did not close down any company that makes alcohol. The agency only bans alcohol in sachets and small containers less than 200ml,” she said. She stressed that the policy is a public health intervention, not a punishment. “This ban is not punitive; […]

Police fire tear gas at Lagos residents protesting Makoko demolitions

There was tension in Lagos on Tuesday as police fired tear gas at residents protesting the demolition of homes in the Makoko waterfront community and other parts of the state. Members of the Makoko community, alongside activists and sympathisers, had gathered to condemn ongoing demolitions and forced evictions they say are displacing thousands of people, including women and children. The protesters marched with placards, chanting against what they described as inhumane and unlawful demolitions, and calling on the Lagos State Government to halt the exercise. They accused the authorities of extending demolitions far beyond previously agreed limits along the powerline corridor and of carrying on without proper notice, compensation or resettlement plans. Trouble started when security operatives, including officers of the Rapid Response Squad, moved in to disperse the crowd. Witnesses said the police fired multiple rounds of tear gas, […]

JAMB denies banning undergraduates from 2026 UTME

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has denied reports that undergraduates have been barred from registering for the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination and Direct Entry. JAMB spokesperson, Dr Fabian Benjamin, said in a statement in Abuja that the rumour was a false interpretation of its guidelines by self-styled education advocates seeking online attention. He explained that the 2026 UTME and DE advertisement only directs candidates to state their current admission status during registration. Benjamin stressed that it is not an offence for a student already admitted into any institution to register for UTME or Direct Entry again. However, he said candidates must truthfully disclose that they are already matriculated, in line with JAMB’s duty to prevent multiple admissions. He noted that once a candidate secures a fresh admission after proper disclosure, the previous admission automatically becomes invalid. Under Nigeria’s […]

Obi challenges Tinubu over failed power promise after new grid collapse

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has questioned President Bola Tinubu over his campaign promise to deliver steady electricity, following another collapse of Nigeria’s national grid in January 2026. In a statement posted on his verified X account on Wednesday, Obi recalled Tinubu’s 2022 campaign pledge that if he failed to provide stable power in his first four years in office, Nigerians should not vote for him for a second term. He said the recent power failures clearly contradict that promise and should concern all Nigerians. Obi noted that the national grid had already collapsed twice in January 2026, even before the end of the month, and about twelve times in 2025. He described the frequent collapses as a sign of deep problems in the power sector, despite repeated assurances from the government. He also criticised President Tinubu’s frequent […]
