UK jails Nigerian man for life over ex girlfriend’s murder

A UK based Nigerian man, Adedapo Adegbola, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering his former girlfriend after she ended their brief relationship.​ Adegbola fatally stabbed 23 year old care worker Stephanie Irons in the neck at her home in Mapperley, Nottinghamshire, on 21 October. Nottingham Crown Court heard he had become obsessed with her and carefully planned the attack.​ The court was told that Adegbola bought two knives on 15 October, then travelled to her address six days later, where he stabbed her multiple times, delivering a fatal wound to her neck.​ Judge Nirmal Shant said Adegbola’s controlling behaviour had driven Irons to end the relationship, but he refused to accept her decision. Army rescues 26 kidnap victims, foils jailbreak in North

The Nigerian Army says its troops have rescued 26 kidnapped victims and foiled an attempted jailbreak in fresh operations across the North West and North Central regions.​ In a statement, the army said the operations targeted terrorist and bandit groups behind recent attacks and abductions in several communities. Senate passes Electoral Act bill, drops plan for mandatory e‑result transmission

The Senate has passed the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026 but declined to make electronic transmission of election results mandatory for the 2027 polls.​ Lawmakers rejected a proposed change to Clause 60 (3), which would have required presiding officers of the Independent National Electoral Commission to transmit polling unit results to the IReV portal in real time after completing Form EC8A. Instead, they retained the existing 2022 provision that results should be transferred “in a manner as prescribed by the Commission.”​ Senate President Godswill Akpabio insisted the chamber did not remove electronic transmission from the law. DSS charges ex AGF Malami, son with terrorism, firearms offences

The Department of State Services has arraigned former Attorney General of the Federation Abubakar Malami and his son Abdulaziz before the Federal High Court in Abuja on terrorism and illegal firearms charges.​ They are facing a five count charge in case number FHC/ABJ/CR/63/2026. Army denies troop deaths in Ebonyi boundary attack

The Nigerian Army has condemned the recent killings in Okporojo village, Edda Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, and vowed to recover the severed heads of the victims. US deploys small military team to Nigeria

The United States has deployed a small military team to Nigeria to support the fight against Boko Haram, ISWAP and armed bandit groups in the north.​ General Dagvin R.M. NECO releases 2025 SSCE external results, records 71.63% pass rate

The National Examinations Council (NECO) has released the 2025 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) External results, with 71.63 per cent of candidates scoring five credits and above including English Language and Mathematics. Registrar and Chief Executive, Prof. Dantani Ibrahim‑Wushishi, announced the results at a news conference at NECO headquarters in Minna, noting that the exams held from November 26 to December 13, 2025, while marking ran from January 5 to 21, 2026. He said the results were released 52 days after the last paper. A total of 96,979 candidates registered, comprising 51,823 males (53.43 per cent) and 45,156 females (46.56 per cent), while 95,160 eventually sat for the examination (50,785 males and 44,375 females).
