UNILAG Students Protest Hike in Private Hostel Fees

Students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) are protesting a sharp rise in accommodation costs at private hostels located on the Akoka campus. Several hostel operators reportedly increased their rents by nearly 40 percent ahead of the new academic session. For instance, a one-bedroom self-contained unit that previously cost ₦500,000 is now being rented for over ₦700,000 per year. Private hostels became popular last year after the federal government-owned official hostels underwent prolonged renovations. During that period, the university temporarily adopted online learning, with students returning in batches only to write their examinations. When contacted for clarification on the situation, UNILAG’s Head of Communication Unit, Alhaja Adejoke Alaga Ibraheem, declined to give an official response, directing all enquiries to the school’s communication unit email. It was further gathered that since the new academic session is yet to begin, the university […]

Your Vote Is Your Voice’ — Saraki Urges Youths to Seize Voter Registration Opportunity

Former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has called on Nigerian youths to take full advantage of the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), stressing that “your vote is your voice.” In a statement shared via his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Tuesday, Saraki lamented the low voter turnout during the 2023 general elections despite a surge in youth registration. “In 2023, young Nigerians showed great promise, as nearly 40 per cent of registered voters were between 18 and 34, and over 93 million collected their PVCs. Yet only 26.7 per cent turned out to vote,” he noted. He urged young Nigerians to turn their numbers into electoral strength:“Your vote is your voice. Your ballot is your power. With it, you choose leaders, you shape policies, and you decide the direction of your community, your […]

US Flags Rights, Justice Concerns in Nigeria; Presidency Defends Reforms

The United States has raised concerns over Nigeria’s human rights, justice system, and economic conditions, citing arbitrary arrests, prolonged pre-trial detentions, and erosion of wages due to naira depreciation. In its 2024 Country Report on Human Rights Practices, released by the Department of State’s Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labour, Washington pointed to enforced disappearances, arbitrary detentions, and systemic failures in justice delivery as persistent challenges. The report referenced Amnesty International’s claims that the whereabouts of “dozens of young men detained at SARS Awkuzu,” in Anambra State remain unknown years after the police unit’s disbandment. It also noted that while Nigerian law requires detainees to be brought before a magistrate within 48 hours, violations by security forces remain common. It further highlighted problems of corruption, inadequate judges, and lack of logistics, saying:“Some detainees were held in pre-trial detention for […]
