Nigeria Police Deport Wanted Chinese Gang Leader

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has deported a notorious Chinese fugitive, Mr. Dai Qisheng, to Beijing in a joint operation with INTERPOL. Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said the move demonstrates Nigeria’s commitment to combating transnational organised crime. Qisheng, described as a gang leader wanted in Guizhou Province, China, for violent criminal activities, fled his country in 2024 after a warrant was issued by the Zhijin County Public Security Bureau. He was tracked and arrested in Abuja on August 8, 2025, by operatives of INTERPOL’s National Central Bureau (NCB) in Nigeria. He was repatriated to Beijing on August 15 under a coordinated framework involving INTERPOL NCB Abuja, INTERPOL NCB Beijing, and the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria. Adejobi said the operation underscores Nigeria’s resolve to deny fugitives safe haven within its borders while strengthening global partnerships against organised crime. […]

ICPC Chair Calls for Timelines in Corruption Trials

The Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Musa Aliyu, has urged constitutional reforms that would set deadlines for the conclusion of corruption cases involving politicians and other high-profile individuals. Speaking on Inside Sources, a Channels Television programme, Aliyu stressed that corruption trials should not drag on indefinitely but be completed within fixed timelines, similar to election petitions. “If we don’t kill corruption, corruption will kill us,” Aliyu said. “Unfortunately, some corruption cases take 10 to 15 years to conclude. By then, even the ICPC chairman who initiated the case may have left office.” He noted that Nigeria may need special courts to handle corruption cases efficiently, pointing to other countries that have adopted such measures. Aliyu also expressed concern over the slow implementation of the Supreme Court’s ruling on local government autonomy, saying political […]

Trump Reportedly Plans National Guard Deployment in Chicago

The Trump administration is reportedly preparing to deploy National Guard troops to Chicago as part of its broader crackdown on crime and immigration, according to The Washington Post. Citing unnamed officials, the paper reported that the Pentagon has been drafting plans that could see several thousand Guard members sent to the city as early as September. The Pentagon declined to confirm the reports, saying only that it regularly coordinates with other agencies to protect federal assets and personnel. The development comes weeks after President Trump authorized National Guard deployments in Washington, D.C., and previously in Los Angeles, where thousands of Guard members and Marines were sent despite state-level opposition. Trump has since suggested that New York could follow Chicago in receiving similar deployments. “We’re going to make our cities very, very safe,” Trump told reporters on Friday. The possible deployment […]

Jaywon Reacts to Billboard’s Exclusion of ‘This Year’ From Afrobeats All-Time List

Nigerian singer, Oluwajuwonlo Iledare, popularly known as Jaywon, has expressed disappointment over the exclusion of his hit track “This Year” from Billboard’s recently released list of the 50 Greatest Afrobeats Songs of All Time. Taking to his X (formerly Twitter) account, Jaywon argued that his 2012 single has enjoyed more cultural relevance and influence than many of the songs featured on the list. “‘This Year’ has been trending consistently since 2012. It has had more viral moments and cultural impact than some of the songs Billboard decided to include,” he wrote. The singer further noted that the song has become a reference point for both gospel and Afrobeats artistes, many of whom, he said, have borrowed its style and message over the years. Billboard’s ranking placed 2Baba’s “African Queen” at number one, followed by Wizkid’s “Ojuelegba”, Flavour’s “Nwa Baby”, Rema’s […]

Kemi Badenoch, Diplomatic Jabs and the Politics of Insult

Mrs. Kemi Badenoch, the UK Conservative Party’s prime ministerial hopeful, must rue the day her proud parents sent her back to Nigeria. Judging from her frequent and subtle expressions of regret, that “dark chapter” of her life must be the reason she is both black in skin and, by association, in her own eyes. I don’t begrudge Madam Badenoch her good fortune of returning early enough to the UK from this “shithole” where she allegedly wielded machetes in a girls’ school like an African village warrior, or where she had to scrub toilets without running water. If she must exaggerate her Nigerian experiences to become Prime Minister, by all means, let her fulminate. It would be good to see her at Number 10, Downing Street. Perhaps as PM she’ll send bulldozers to flatten this “heap of a country” from where […]

Tinubu’s Rewards Spark Fresh Debate Among Ex-Falcons

Several former Nigerian women’s football stars, under the umbrella of United Ex-Super Falcons of Nigeria Worldwide, have applauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, for their renewed commitment to appreciating women footballers. The commendation followed an online meeting on Wednesday where the ex-internationals celebrated Tinubu’s recent gesture of rewarding the current Super Falcons with cash prizes, plots of land, and national honours after their WAFCON triumph in Morocco. Former captain Kikelomo Ajayi said the recognition has inspired younger players across the country. “The nation stands to gain from this initiative,” she noted, while urging the presidency to extend similar honours to past heroines who laid the foundation for today’s successes. US-based former forward Patience Avre-Odeli praised Mallam Dikko’s advisory role to the presidency on sports development. “We monitored Dikko’s comments at […]
