Nigeria’s U 19 women’s team pulled off a dramatic one run win over South Africa in a Super Over on Matchday 9 of the Patricia Kambarami Cup, part of the Nigeria Invitational T20i Tournament. The hosts kept their campaign alive thanks to a captain’s performance from Lucky Piety.
South Africa chose to bat first but slipped to 18 for 3 after six overs. They recovered through captain Mieke Van Voorst, who anchored the innings with 69 from 47 balls, with late support from Siphokuhle Masilela, who added 20, to post a competitive 133 for 7 from 20 overs.
Nigeria started their chase slowly and had only 47 runs on the board at the halfway stage. Piety then seized control, smashing 66 from 35 balls, including a crucial 24 run over, to drag Nigeria back into the contest and eventually level the scores at 133 after 20 overs.
In the Super Over, Nigeria scored 10 runs without losing a wicket. Bowler Amusa Muheebat then held her nerve superbly, limiting South Africa to 9 for 1 and sealing a narrow but vital victory for the home side. Piety was named Player of the Match for her game changing innings.
In the day’s other fixture, Zimbabwe produced a record breaking display to crush Ghana by 180 runs. Zimbabwe racked up a tournament record 226 for 2 in their 20 overs, led by Beloved Biza’s unbeaten 102 from 52 balls and Lorraine Pemhiwa’s 60 from 32 deliveries in a relentless boundary hitting partnership.
Ghana never recovered in reply and were bowled out for just 45 in 18.3 overs. Salem Museka tore through the batting with figures of 4 for 8 from four overs, while Biza completed a remarkable all round performance by taking 3 for 10. Zimbabwe’s 180 run margin is now the largest win in the history of the competition.
