Kylian Mbappe missed Real Madrid’s training session on Tuesday, putting his participation in the Champions League showdown against Manchester City in serious doubt. The 26 year old forward recently fractured a finger in the La Liga defeat to Celta Vigo and is now experiencing enough discomfort to sit out full training.
Spanish reports say the club initially expected Mbappe to play through the pain using protective strapping on his hand. However, he is also understood to be dealing with muscle discomfort in his left leg, which has raised additional concern over his fitness for the match at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Mbappe has been Real Madrid’s main attacking threat this season, scoring more than half of the team’s goals in all competitions. Losing him would be a major blow for coach Xabi Alonso as he prepares to face Pep Guardiola’s side in a high pressure knockout tie.
A final decision on Mbappe’s availability is expected on match day after further medical checks and assessment of how he feels. Several other Real Madrid players are already sidelined, meaning the squad could be significantly weakened if Mbappe is not passed fit.
