New Patriotic Party presidential aspirant, Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has sharply criticised religious leaders who publicly predict outcomes of the party’s presidential primaries, describing their actions as inappropriate and misplaced.
Speaking to JoyNews, Agyepong questioned why pastors and prophets are increasingly inserting themselves into partisan political contests, particularly through prophetic declarations about election winners.
“They are supposed to be preachers, preaching the gospel. I don’t know what business they have dabbling in politics. I find it very strange,” he said.
According to Agyepong, churches are drifting away from their core mission as political discussions creep into religious spaces. He expressed concern that sermons and church gatherings are now being used to debate presidential outcomes rather than spiritual matters.
“You go to church and people are now discussing who will be president. Is that the work of a minister?” he asked.
He argued that faith should not be weaponised to influence political decisions, stressing that spirituality is personal and cannot be reduced to public political endorsements disguised as prophecy.
“God takes care of all of us. He speaks to all of us. He gives gifts, prophets, teachers, apostles. That’s biblical,” Agyepong said. “But what we’re seeing now goes beyond that.”
The former NPP General Secretary said recent prophecies linked to the party’s internal contest have crossed a line, describing them as aggressive and excessive. He made it clear that such claims neither intimidate nor influence him.
“What they’ve been doing now has been hawkish and suckish. I don’t worry about it. I don’t even give it a thought,” he stated.
Agyepong emphasized that the outcome of the NPP primaries rests solely with party delegates, not religious figures. He noted that voting decisions are deeply personal and shaped by individual conviction rather than prophetic pronouncements.
“At the end of the day, God inspires us in different ways. Each of the 212 voters, when they wake up in the morning, you never know how they communicated with their God, and that will decide where they go,” he said.
He added that political choices are not fixed and can change even at the last moment. “Some people change their mind when they see the ballot paper. They are spiritual beings,” he noted.

Rescue teams are continuing efforts to locate and extract individuals believed to be trapped beneath the rubble of a collapsed building in Accra’s North Industrial Area following a structural failure that has left several people injured.
