The Kremlin described U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff’s three-hour meeting with President Vladimir Putin on August 6‑7, 2025, as “useful and constructive,” even as a looming ceasefire deadline set by U.S. President Donald Trump—with threats of heavy sanctions—approaches.
The talks, which took place at the Kremlin, reportedly covered the Ukraine crisis and the potential for strategic cooperation between Moscow and Washington. Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov stated that the sides had exchanged “signals” on the conflict, though he declined to elaborate until Witkoff reported back to Trump. Russian investment envoy Kirill Dmitriev, who accompanied Witkoff, reiterated the message on social media: “Dialogue will prevail.”.
Despite the Kremlin’s optimism, observers see the meeting as a last‑ditch diplomatic effort. President Trump has issued an ultimatum: Russia must agree to a full ceasefire by August 8, or face 100% tariffs on its exports and sanctions on trade partners, notably India and China.
Yet Kremlin sources suggest Putin remains unconvinced that U.S. sanctions pose a real threat—he believes Russia is securing gains on the battlefield and sees the war objectives as paramount. A proposal reportedly under discussion would involve a moratorium on long-range air strikes by both sides—a partial concession short of the full ceasefire Ukraine and Washington seek—but one that might offer momentary relief.
With the deadline just two days away, pressure is mounting. Trump has accused Moscow of escalating brutality in its strikes on Kyiv and disputed recent Russian attacks as “disgusting”.
The outcome of Witkoff’s visit remains uncertain. While the Kremlin emphasised the talks’ constructive nature, no formal agreement was announced. Analysts caution that without clear concessions, the visit may amount to symbolic posturing rather than progress. In Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy continues to demand an immediate ceasefire and a summit-level negotiation.
