Kano State Bans ‘Kauyawa Day’ Celebrations to Preserve Cultural Values

Kano’s Bold Move Against ‘Kauyawa Day’

The Kano State Censorship Board has imposed a statewide ban on Kauyawa Day , a traditional pre-wedding celebration, citing concerns over indecency, social disorder, and erosion of cultural values . The decision, announced by Executive Chairman Abba El-Mustapha , aims to align public practices with the state’s moral and religious ideals.

What is Kauyawa Day?

Traditionally, Kauyawa Day involves:

  • Friends and family gathering 1–2 days before weddings .
  • Cultural displays of traditional attire, local cuisine, and music .
  • Community bonding through shared rituals and festivities.

However, recent years saw the event transform into extravagant parties featuring loud music, provocative dancing, and viral social media content—practices the Board deemed “unwholesome.”

Why the Ban?

El-Mustapha emphasized:
“The current form of Kauyawa Day—marked by indecent dressing, suggestive dancing, and immoral content—threatens societal decency. We must protect our cultural heritage and religious values.”

The ban prohibits event centers and party halls from hosting Kauyawa-related activities until regulations are reviewed.

Enforcement Strategy

  • Security Collaboration: Joint enforcement with police and agencies to ensure compliance.
  • Community Mobilization: Engaging elders, youth groups, and religious leaders for grassroots sensitization.
  • Religious Advocacy: Imams and Islamic scholars are tasked with educating communities on the ban’s necessity.

Public Reaction

While supporters applaud the move as a defense of tradition, critics argue it stifles cultural expression. Social media debates rage over whether the ban protects morality or suppresses harmless celebration .

US Iran war: FG gets N5tn oil windfall amid fuel pain

Nigeria’s Federal Government has earned an estimated N5.13 trillion oil windfall from the surge in global crude prices triggered by the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran. However, despite the revenue boost, Nigerians continue to grapple with fuel scarcity, high pump prices and rising transport and living costs. According to industry data cited in the report, the country’s additional crude oil earnings have accumulated over recent months as Brent prices climbed well above earlier budget projections. The war and fears of wider instability in the Middle East have tightened global supply, pushing up prices and generating unexpected income for oil producing nations, including Nigeria. Analysts estimate that Nigeria’s windfall, put at about N5.13 trillion, is based on the difference between the benchmark oil price in the national budget and the much higher average price recorded since hostilities escalated.
