Kaduna Gov Sani vows not to borrow for projects, pledges completion

Article arrow_drop_down

Kaduna State governor, Uba Sani, has assured residents that his administration will not borrow or incur debts to fund projects, even as he pledged to complete several abandoned projects inherited from past governments.

Speaking at the groundbreaking of a 16.5-kilometre asphalt road linking Kayarda Tasha, Kayarda Gari, Unguwan Sarki, Maskawa, and Dan Alhaji in Lere Local Government, the governor said the project, handled by a reputable construction company, would be the first of its kind in the area.

“This kind of project is unprecedented in Lere Local Government,” Sani said, adding that his government was prioritising infrastructure without resorting to borrowing.

He also listed completed and ongoing projects in the council area, including the Rewa Bridge and Marjeri Bridge, while assuring that the Tudai Bridge would be delivered in two months. The governor further disclosed interventions to restore electricity in Yarkasuwa, Kayarda, Ramin Kura, and Mariri towns.

Commissioner of Environment, Alhaji Abubakar Buba, praised Sani’s leadership style, describing him as a man of his word. He also commended the governor for appointing several Lere indigenes into key political positions.

House Majority Leader, Munira Suleiman Tanimu, recalled that the people of Lere had demanded the road project during campaigns, expressing confidence that the governor’s performance would secure another electoral victory for the APC in 2027.

Also present, House of Representatives member Ahmed Munir lauded Sani’s grassroots connection, recalling his days as a football striker in Saminaka.
“Governor Uba Sani will continue to be a striker in the political realm,” Munir said.

Israel says it won’t withdraw troops from Lebanon, Syria, Gaza

Israel's Defense Minister Israel Katz has declared that Israeli troops will remain indefinitely in "security zones" in the Gaza Strip, Lebanon and Syria, marking a major policy shift in the country's military approach to border security. Katz emphasized that unlike previous instances, the Israeli military is not retreating from areas that have been cleared and taken, stating that troops will remain in the security zones acting as a buffer between adversaries and Israeli communities "regardless of whether the situation in Gaza is temporary or permanent" – similar to the approach in Lebanon and Syria. The defense minister's announcement comes after Israel unilaterally expanded its frontiers in the war unleashed by Hamas' October 7, 2023 attack, and the military strengthens its control over various occupied regions. Israel says it must maintain control of what it refers to as security zones to […]

Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that the peace deal will be officially signed in Switzerland on Friday, June 19, with both sides working toward electronic signing preparations. US and Iranian officials confirmed on Sunday that they have agreed on a framework to end months of war, reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and lift the US blockade on Iran. […]

Crude oil prices fall as US-Iran peace deal boosts global markets

Global crude oil prices have plunged after the United States and Iran reportedly reached a landmark peace agreement, easing fears of prolonged conflict in the Middle East and boosting investor confidence across global markets. Brent crude, the primary benchmark for worldwide oil prices, fell 3.4% to $87.30 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude declined 3.2% to $84.88 a barrel. Front-month Brent crude futures had decreased by 4.3%, settling at $86.50 per barrel, while front-month WTI crude futures also dropped by 4.3%, now at $83.76 per barrel. The market reaction follows President Donald Trump's announcement that the U.S. has agreed to a peace deal with Iran, allowing the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and removing oil sanctions on Iran. This development has reduced concerns over oil supply disruptions from the region and eased fears that the conflict would […]

Diya and I didn’t know where Abiola was held, says Abdulsalami

Former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.), has revealed that before he assumed power in 1998, neither he nor General Oladipo Diya, the then Chief of General Staff and second‑in‑command to General Sani Abacha, knew the exact location where Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola was being detained. Abdulsalami said that, despite occupying senior positions in the military hierarchy under Abacha, key details about Abiola’s incarceration were tightly controlled and kept away from them. He explained that it was only after Abacha’s sudden death on June 8, 1998, and his own emergence as Head of State, that he gained direct access to information regarding Abiola’s custody. In his account, Abdulsalami stressed that Abacha’s regime operated with a high level of secrecy, especially on sensitive political detainees like Abiola, the presumed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election. Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested a Brazil-based Nigerian businessman, Uche Franklin Onyekwere, for attempting to smuggle cocaine into the country through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, in coordinated operations across multiple states. Onyekwere, 47, was apprehended at the airport's arrival hall during the inward screening of passengers on a South African Airways flight from Brazil via Johannesburg, following intelligence-led profiling and surveillance. A body scan conducted on the suspect indicated the presence of concealed substances, and a subsequent strip search uncovered a large wrap of a white powdery substance, later confirmed to be cocaine, strapped to his right thigh. Further examination revealed two additional wraps hidden inside the soles of the flat shoes he was wearing, with NDLEA officers recovering three wraps of cocaine weighing 1.6 kilogrammes in total. Abacha’s death suspicious, says Abdulsalami Abubakar

Former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.), has described the circumstances surrounding the death of the late military ruler, General Sani Abacha, as suspicious, saying the events of that day left him feeling that “something was fishy.” Abacha died suddenly on June 8, 1998, while still serving as Nigeria’s Head of State, with the official explanation pointing to a heart attack. In a new account contained in his book, Call of Duty, and recent media interviews, Abdulsalami recalls that he and the then Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Ishaya Bamaiyi, were mysteriously locked inside a waiting room at the Presidential Villa for nearly an hour before being told Abacha had died. According to Abdulsalami, he was urgently summoned to the Villa that morning but, on arrival, was led into a room and the door was shut with no explanation. […]
