Kaduna Set to Become One-Party State as Opposition Lawmakers Defect to APC – Gov Sani

Article arrow_drop_down

Zaria, Kaduna | April 15, 2025 – Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani has declared that the state is on track to becoming a one-party state under the All Progressives Congress (APC), following the mass defection of opposition lawmakers to the ruling party. The governor made the announcement during a high-profile empowerment program in Zaria, where House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abbas distributed vehicles and tricycles to constituents.

Key Developments

✔ Mass Defections:

  • 4 House of Representatives members from opposition parties have joined the APC.
  • Multiple Kaduna State Assembly members from different zones have also defected.

✔ Governor’s Statement:
“The defection of opposition members to APC shows we are doing something positive. We are carrying everyone along in Kaduna State. Soon, we will operate as a one-party state.”

✔ Speaker Abbas’ Empowerment Program:

  • Distributed 117 vehicles (Hilux vans, ambulances, buses, sedans).
  • Gave out 200 tricycles (Keke NAPEP) and 1,000 motorcycles to beneficiaries.

✔ Governor’s Praise for Abbas:

  • “Speaker Abbas has brought development to education, healthcare, and infrastructure across Kaduna—not just his constituency.” .
  • “He will make history as Speaker twice—we will work together for Kaduna’s progress.” .

Why This Matters

🔹 Political Dominance: APC’s growing control signals weakening opposition in Kaduna.
🔹 Governance Impact: Defectors may strengthen APC’s legislative agenda.
🔹 Federal Alignment: Governor Sani and Speaker Abbas are key allies of President Tinubu.

Opposition Reactions

  • PDP & Labour Party: Yet to respond publicly, but internal crises plague both parties nationally.
  • SDP’s Challenge: Former Governor El-Rufai’s defection to SDP has not dented APC’s momentum in Kaduna.

What’s Next?

📌 2027 Elections: APC aims to consolidate power further.
📌 Opposition Strategy: Will PDP, LP, or SDP regroup to counter APC’s dominance?

Why This Matters
✅ Political Shift: Kaduna may become Nigeria’s first one-party state.
✅ Federal Influence: Governor and Speaker align with Tinubu’s agenda.
✅ Opposition Decline: PDP and LP struggles amplify APC’s hold.

📢 Debate: Is one-party dominance good for democracy? Comment below!

“APC’s grip on Kaduna reflects broader opposition fragility in Nigeria.” – Political Analyst

Primaries: APC Reps fight back after ticket losses

A number of All Progressives Congress (APC) members of the House of Representatives who lost their return tickets in the just‑concluded primaries are fighting back through legal challenges and internal party pressure. At least 26 incumbent lawmakers are at the centre of the brewing crisis, accusing party leaders and primary election officials of manipulation, imposition and disenfranchisement. Some aggrieved Reps have petitioned the APC national leadership and primary appeals panels, demanding the cancellation or review of results in their constituencies. They allege irregularities such as last‑minute changes to delegates’ lists, vote‑buying, intimidation of voters and the imposition of consensus candidates without proper consultation. Others are turning to the courts, filing suits to challenge the conduct of primaries or to seek recognition as the authentic candidates. However, analysts note that the amended Electoral Act now prevents aspirants who lost party primaries […]
