Israeli Strike Kills Journalists in Gaza City

Article arrow_drop_down

Seven people, including several journalists, were killed in an Israeli airstrike on Gaza City, according to broadcaster reports. Among the victims was 28-year-old correspondent Anas al-Sharif, whom the Israeli military accused of leading a Hamas terrorist cell. The military has provided limited evidence to support the claim.

Sharif had previously worked with a Hamas media team in Gaza before the current conflict. However, some of his earlier social media posts were critical of the group. The strike also claimed the lives of another Al Jazeera correspondent, three camera operators, and a freelance reporter, all of whom were on assignment at the time.

Al Jazeera described the incident as a targeted assassination and accused Israel of carrying out a premeditated attack on press freedom. The United Nations condemned the killings, calling them a grave breach of international humanitarian law. The Committee to Protect Journalists reported that 186 journalists have been killed since Israel’s military offensive in Gaza began in October 2023.

Due to restrictions on foreign media access, international news outlets, including the BBC, are unable to operate freely inside Gaza and rely heavily on local journalists for coverage.

In a related diplomatic development, Australia announced it will formally recognise a Palestinian state at the United Nations next month, joining recent moves by the UK, France, and Canada.

Ghana to Declare 21 Marine Protected Areas Starting at Greater Cape Three Points

Ghana is preparing to declare 21 coastal communities as Marine Protected Areas in a major step toward restoring marine biodiversity and strengthening fisheries management. The first declaration is expected to take place at Greater Cape Three Points in the Western Region. Once designated, fishing activities within the protected zones will be restricted to allow depleted fish stocks to recover. Part of the Global 30×30 Target The move forms part of Ghana’s commitment to the global 30×30 target, which calls for the protection of at least 30 percent of the world’s land and ocean areas by 2030. The goal falls under Target 3 of the Global Biodiversity Framework and has been adopted by more than 190 countries. Despite the widespread commitment, progress remains slow. Since 2022, global reviews show that only about 2.9 percent of the ocean is fully or highly […]

Indirect talks between the United States and Iran over Tehran’s nuclear programme have ended in Geneva without a deal but with both sides reporting limited progress and plans to meet again soon. Oman’s foreign minister, Sayyid Badr Albusaidi, who mediated the discussions, said negotiators exchanged “creative and positive ideas” and agreed to resume talks after consulting their capitals, with technical meetings scheduled in Vienna next week. He described the day as one of “significant progress” but gave no details on whether the main sticking points had been resolved. The talks, held separately between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, are widely seen as a last chance to avoid possible US military strikes, amid a major American buildup of warships and jets near Iran. Araqchi told Iranian state TV that the negotiations were “intense […]
