The Israeli military has told Palestinians that the evacuation of Gaza City is “inevitable” as its forces prepare for a full takeover.
In a post on X on Wednesday, military spokesperson Avichay Adraee urged families to relocate south, promising they would “receive the most generous humanitarian aid.”
Overnight, Israeli tanks advanced into the Ibad al-Rahman district, in Gaza City’s northern outskirts, destroying homes and forcing more residents to flee. Witnesses said the sounds of heavy explosions grew louder as families escaped.
By Wednesday morning, tanks had reportedly pulled back to Jabalia, where Israeli troops said they eliminated a “terrorist cell” and uncovered a weapons storage site.
Meanwhile, bombardment continued in Shejaiya, Zeitoun, and Sabra districts.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to conquer the entire Gaza Strip after ceasefire and hostage talks with Hamas collapsed last month.
But he is under mounting pressure at home and abroad. In Tel Aviv, tens of thousands protested on Tuesday night, demanding a deal to free the remaining Israeli hostages. Of the 50 still held, only 20 are believed to be alive.
In Washington, US special envoy Steve Witkoff said the White House is preparing “a very comprehensive plan” for Gaza’s future. He confirmed that President Donald Trump will chair a high-level meeting on Wednesday to discuss “the next day” after the war.
Witkoff suggested the conflict would be settled “one way or another” before the end of the year.
Since the war began after the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led attack on southern Israel—which killed about 1,200 people and saw 251 taken hostage—the devastation in Gaza has been staggering:
- 62,900 killed, according to the Hamas-run health ministry
- More than 90% of homes damaged or destroyed
- Widespread displacement, with most families forced to flee multiple times
- Collapse of healthcare, sanitation, and water systems
- UN experts confirm famine in Gaza City
The UN and aid agencies warn that an Israeli offensive into Gaza City could cause a “horrific humanitarian impact” on the roughly one million Palestinians still living there.
