Australia to quarantine six people from hantavirus‑hit cruise ship

Article arrow_drop_down

Australian authorities will place six people evacuated from a hantavirus hit cruise ship into a purpose built quarantine facility north of Perth for a minimum of three weeks. The six passengers, five Australians and one New Zealander, are being flown home on a government charter after weeks aboard the MV Hondius, a Dutch flagged luxury expedition ship linked to a cluster of deadly hantavirus infections.

Federal Health Minister Mark Butler said the group will be taken directly from their aircraft to the Bullsbrook quarantine centre, near RAAF Base Pearce, and kept away from the general public throughout their stay. None of the six currently shows symptoms of hantavirus, but officials describe the move as a “precautionary approach” given the virus’s long incubation period, which can stretch up to six to eight weeks.

During quarantine, the passengers will undergo regular health checks and testing, with samples sent to specialist labs such as the Doherty Institute in Melbourne for analysis. The World Health Organization has recommended a quarantine period of about 42 days for those exposed on the ship, due to the rare possibility of limited person to person transmission suggested in this cluster.

The MV Hondius has been at the centre of international concern after at least three passengers died and several others were confirmed or suspected to have contracted an Andes strain of hantavirus, a rodent borne disease that can cause severe respiratory illness. Countries including several in Europe, the United States and now Australia have been airlifting their nationals from Tenerife in Spain’s Canary Islands, where the ship has docked.

Australian health authorities insist that the risk to the wider public remains very low, noting that hantavirus infection is usually linked to contact with rodent droppings rather than casual human contact. Still, they say the strict quarantine arrangements are necessary to eliminate any chance of onward spread and to give the returning passengers appropriate care and monitoring.

Ego, inner competition undermine collaborations in Afrobeats – Joeboy

Afrobeats singer Joeboy has decried the growing impact of ego and inner competition on collaborations among Nigerian artists. He said many artistes now approach joint projects with a mindset of rivalry instead of focusing on making timeless music together. According to him, some colleagues only agree to collaborate when they think they will gain more numbers, clout or validation than the other party. Joeboy noted that this attitude makes it difficult to build sincere, long-term partnerships of the kind that once helped push Afrobeats to global prominence. He explained that behind the scenes, a lot of artistes constantly monitor streams, charts and social media buzz, even while publicly preaching unity and “love” in the industry. This quiet comparison culture, he argued, breeds resentment and silently kills the spirit of true collaboration. Despite these challenges, Joeboy maintained that collaborations remain one […]

UAE Denies Netanyahu’s Secret Visit Claim

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has claimed he made a secret visit to the United Arab Emirates during the recent conflict involving Iran, saying he met UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed in what his office described as a “historic breakthrough”. According to Netanyahu’s office, the meeting focused on strengthening cooperation between Israel and the UAE amid growing regional tensions linked to the war with Iran. Reports suggested the talks took place in the Emirati city of Al-Ain, near the border with Oman. However, the UAE quickly rejected the claims. In an official statement, the Emirati foreign ministry described reports of Netanyahu’s visit as “completely false” and stressed that relations with Israel are conducted openly through the framework of the Abraham Accords, not through secret arrangements. The UAE also reaffirmed its commitment to transparent diplomacy, insisting that no unofficial Israeli […]

Starmer Faces Revolt Inside Labour Party

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has warned Labour ministers and MPs that any attempt to remove him from office could throw the government into “chaos”, as pressure continues to mount inside his party. Facing growing criticism and resignation calls from several Labour lawmakers, Starmer used meetings in Parliament to defend his leadership and present what he described as a “radical” programme aimed at transforming the country. The prime minister promised major reforms in areas including healthcare, housing and immigration, insisting his government was prepared to challenge policies that had failed working people for years. His comments came shortly after the presentation of the government’s legislative programme during the King’s Speech delivered by Charles III in Parliament. Among the proposals announced were plans to abolish NHS England, introduce digital identity systems, reform leasehold property rules, strengthen rail infrastructure in northern England […]

Trump heads to China, says no need for Xi’s help on Iran war

US President Donald Trump has travelled to China for a crucial summit with President Xi Jinping, declaring that he does not expect to need Beijing’s help to end the ongoing war with Iran. Speaking to reporters before departing Washington, Trump downplayed China’s potential role in resolving the conflict, which has severely disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. “I don’t think we need any help with Iran. We’ll win it one way or the other, peacefully or otherwise,” he said, in comments that underscored his determination to project confidence despite mounting costs and diplomatic pressure. The war has seen both the US and Iran impede maritime traffic in a waterway that normally carries around one-fifth of the world’s oil supply. Trump’s remarks contrast with expectations from some analysts and allies, who had hoped China might use its economic ties with […]

Nvidia CEO joins Trump’s mission to ‘open up’ China

Huang’s presence has fuelled speculation that Nvidia could secure breakthroughs on long-delayed approvals for its H200 artificial intelligence chips, which have faced export restrictions and regulatory hurdles in China. An Nvidia spokesperson said the CEO is attending the Trump–Xi summit at the president’s invitation “to support America and the administration’s goals.” The Nvidia boss is travelling alongside other heavyweight CEOs, including Tesla’s Elon Musk and Apple’s Tim Cook, as Washington and Beijing prepare for talks that will touch on trade, AI, semiconductors and the aftermath of the Iran war. Analysts say the participation of such tech and industrial leaders underlines how central advanced chips and supply chains have become to US–China relations. Trump has framed the mission as an effort to “open up” China further to US goods and investment, while Chinese officials hope the visit will ease export controls […]

Stung by Iran war, Trump heads to China in need of wins

US President Donald Trump is heading to China this week seeking much-needed diplomatic and economic wins after an unpopular war with Iran has weakened his standing at home and abroad. Analysts say Trump’s once bold ambition to force Beijing into sweeping concessions through tariffs and pressure has been blunted by court rulings and the political fallout from the conflict in the Middle East. Trump is due to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on May 14 and 15, their first face-to-face talks since the two leaders agreed to pause a bruising trade war last October. Expectations for the summit are modest, with US officials now focusing on securing limited deals on agricultural exports like soybeans, beef and a potential package involving Boeing aircraft. Beyond trade, the Iran war is expected to dominate the agenda as Washington quietly seeks China’s […]

Iran chief negotiator says US must accept proposal or face ‘failure’

Iran’s chief negotiator has warned that the United States must accept Tehran’s latest proposal in the ongoing talks or risk what he called a “failure” of the entire diplomatic process. In comments reported on Tuesday, he said Washington has reached a decisive moment and that continued hesitation would only deepen the stalemate. The negotiator, speaking on behalf of Iran’s foreign ministry, accused the US of clinging to “excessive” and “maximalist” demands that had already undermined earlier rounds of negotiations. He insisted that Iran’s latest offer is a balanced framework that respects the country’s rights while creating a path to resolve disputes over sanctions and its nuclear programme. According to regional reports, the proposal is part of a broader package seeking relief from what Tehran describes as “illegal unilateral sanctions” in exchange for verifiable steps on nuclear and security issues. Iranian […]
