President Donald Trump’s Nigerian counterpart, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has removed Kayode Egbetokun as Inspector General of Police, paving the way for Assistant Inspector General Tunji Disu to take over as the country’s new police chief. Egbetokun, who was appointed the 22nd IGP in June 2023, was reportedly directed to prepare his handover notes, with senior police and presidency sources confirming that a formal announcement and ceremony are being arranged.
Sources quoted in multiple reports say Tinubu personally ordered Egbetokun’s exit amid growing controversies around his extended stay in office beyond normal retirement age, as well as internal discontent over his leadership style. Some officers described him as “power drunk” and linked his removal partly to health concerns, claiming the president wants him to focus on treatment for reported kidney related medical issues.
Egbetokun’s tenure was dogged by scandals, including allegations of favouritism, questionable promotions and a storm over alleged diversion of security funds, with ₦100 million from Anambra State’s security vote said to have been traced to an account linked to his son. Rather than allow open investigation, his office was accused of targeting journalists and activists who reported the allegations, including rights campaigner Omoyele Sowore, whom he dragged to court after being labelled an “illegal IGP.”
Tunji Disu, who is set to replace him, is a highly regarded officer and former head of the Intelligence Response Team, recently serving as an Assistant Inspector General in charge of the FCID Annex in Alagbon, Lagos. His elevation makes him the 23rd Inspector General of Police and is expected to usher in a new phase of reforms and operational realignment within the Nigeria Police Force as the administration seeks firmer control over internal security and crime fighting nationwide.

Police investigate alleged shooting of comedian Broda Shaggi
