Nollywood actress Bolaji Ogunmola has opened up about the challenges she faced in her early years in the movie industry, saying she was heavily stereotyped because of her looks. She revealed that producers and directors often judged her by her dark skin and curvy body, boxing her into a narrow range of roles.
According to Ogunmola, many filmmakers preferred light‑skinned actresses for lead characters at the time, while she was frequently considered only for supporting or “side chick” roles. “It was almost like they wanted to put me in a box,” she recalled, noting that her body type was used as an excuse to limit the kind of characters she could play.
The actress said these stereotypes made it difficult to show her full range as a performer and slowed her journey to more complex, leading roles. Over time, however, she began to seek out scripts that offered layered, challenging characters and refused to accept parts that only objectified or reduced her.
Ogunmola, who studied Business Management and Entrepreneurship before training as an actor at the Royal Arts Academy, added that she also leans on her entrepreneurial side to stay independent and selective with projects. She explained that building multiple income streams has allowed her to focus on quality roles rather than taking jobs that reinforce negative industry stereotypes.
In recent years, Bolaji Ogunmola has attracted attention for her performances on TV and in films, as well as for her outspoken stance against the negative portrayal of women, especially Yoruba women, on screen. She says she now looks forward to more diverse roles, including a possible biopic, as she continues to push back against typecasting in Nollywood.

Nollywood actress Linda Ejiofor has revealed that she once feared her acting career had stalled, three years before her historic double win at the 2026 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA). She said she went through a period of deep anxiety when quality roles seemed to dry up and she worried that the industry had moved on from her. According to Ejiofor, she took those concerns to God in prayer, asking specifically for a role that would challenge her and reignite her passion for acting. That prayer was eventually answered with two powerful projects – “The Serpent’s Gift” and “The Herd” – which would later change the trajectory of her career. At the 12th AMVCA, Linda made history as the first actress to win both Best Lead Actress and Best Supporting Actress on the same night. She clinched Best Lead […]

Kelechi Iheanacho: It feels so good, I can’t let go of this trophy
Super Eagles striker Kelechi Iheanacho has expressed his delight after helping Celtic clinch the Scottish Premiership title, calling the triumph one of the sweetest moments of his career. Speaking in a post‑match interview while clutching the league trophy, the Nigerian forward said: “It feels good, it feels so good, I can’t let go of this trophy.” Iheanacho joined Celtic last summer and endured a mixed season disrupted by injury, but he played a crucial role in the title run‑in. FIFA holds talks with Iran over 2026 World Cup participation
FIFA has invited officials from the Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran (FFIRI) for talks over the country’s participation at the 2026 World Cup, which will be staged in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The meeting is expected to take place at FIFA’s headquarters in Zurich and comes amid heightened political tensions and questions over Iran’s ability and willingness to play matches on U.S. soil. Iran had earlier hinted it might withdraw from the tournament following military clashes with the U.S. and concerns over travel restrictions, visas and security for players and officials. Despite this, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has repeatedly insisted that Iran will participate, stressing at the FIFA Congress that “of course Iran will be participating in the FIFA World Cup 2026” and will play in the United States. Reports say FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström will […]

Chelsea appoint Xabi Alonso as coach on four-year deal
Chelsea have appointed Spanish tactician Xabi Alonso as their new manager on a four-year deal, bringing an end to weeks of speculation over the club’s next head coach. The 44-year-old former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder will take charge from July 1, 2026, after agreeing a contract that runs until 2030. Alonso has been out of work since his brief spell in charge of Real Madrid ended in January, but his reputation remains high after previously guiding Bayer Leverkusen to an historic unbeaten Bundesliga title. Chelsea’s owners, BlueCo, identified him as their top target following the dismissal of Liam Rosenior and moved quickly to finalise personal terms. Reports say Alonso sought clear assurances over Chelsea’s transfer strategy and the extent of his authority before committing to the project. His title as manager rather than just head coach is seen as a significant […]

Trump says Xi agrees Iran must open strait, China says war shouldn’t have started
U.S. President Donald Trump says Chinese President Xi Jinping has agreed that Iran must reopen the Strait of Hormuz, but there is still no clear sign that Beijing will directly pressure Tehran to do so. Trump spoke while flying back from Beijing after two days of talks with Xi, where the crisis over Iran and global oil supplies dominated discussions. Iran has effectively shut the vital waterway, which previously carried about one‑fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas, following joint U.S. and Israeli attacks on February 28. The disruption has triggered the biggest oil supply shock in history and sent energy prices soaring, piling pressure on economies already struggling with slow growth. Trump said both leaders shared the goal of preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon and of restoring safe passage through the strait. He also revealed […]
