Only 35% of deaths registered in 2024 – Births and Deaths Registry raises concern

The Births and Deaths Registry has raised concerns over the low rate of death registrations in Ghana, revealing that only 35% of deaths nationwide were officially recorded in 2024. Speaking on Adom FM’s Burning Issues with host Akua Boakyewaa Yiadom, Emmanuel Nortey Botway, Head of Projects and Civil Registration Expert at the Registry, described the trend as alarming and called for greater public awareness and cooperation. “What Ghanaians are poor at is registering the deaths of their relatives,” Mr. Botway noted. “In 2024, we were able to register only 35% of deaths across the country, which is quite worrying,” he added. Six injured in violent attack over land dispute at Domeabra

Six people have been injured in a violent land dispute between residents of Danchira and Domeabra in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region. The conflict, which began on the evening of Tuesday, April 22, escalated at the outskirts of the Domeabra community with gunshots fired, leaving several individuals injured. Some of the victims received initial treatment at a local health facility before being transferred to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC). Passport fee reduction to take effect after Parliamentary approval – Minister

Although the government had announced a 30 per cent cut in the cost of an ordinary passport, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, clarified in a Facebook post that the new fee will only take effect when Parliament reconvenes. The revised fee is part of a broader set of passport reforms scheduled to begin on Monday, April 28, 2025, but the price change remains subject to legislative approval. Mr Ablakwa had earlier informed Parliament on March 13, 2025, that the reduction was in response to public concerns over affordability. Finance Ministry submits bill to Parliament to end sole-sourcing of power contracts

Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson made the announcement on April 23 2025, during a session on the Ghana Energy Compact under Mission 300, organised by the World Bank. Government, GoldFields reach agreement on Damang mine transition

The Government of Ghana and GoldFields Ghana Limited have reached a transitional agreement for the operation of the Damang Mine. The agreement was announced in a statement signed by the Minister for Government Communications and Spokesperson to the President, Felix Kwakye Ofosu. It stated that under the new arrangement, a 12-month mining lease will be issued to GoldFields’ subsidiary, Abosso Goldfields Limited, while awaiting parliamentary ratification, which is expected in May 2025. During this period, GoldFields will resume open-pit mining activities to safeguard jobs and conduct feasibility studies to assess the mine’s reserves and future viability.
