FG Declares July 15 a Public Holiday For Buhari’s Passing
In line with the seven-day national mourning period ordered by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu , the Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025 , a public holiday in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR) , who passed away on Sunday, July 13 , in London .
Interior Minister Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo made the announcement on behalf of the government.
He said the declaration came after approval from President Tinubu , and serves as a national tribute to Buhari’s years of service and his impact on governance and unity.
“This day gives all Nigerians the opportunity to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he stood for.”
“A Mark of Respect” – Interior Ministry
Minister Tunji-Ojo described the public holiday as a sign of respect for Buhari’s long service to the nation—both as a military Head of State and as a democratically elected president .
“President Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to national unity.”
He urged citizens to use the day not only for mourning but also for promoting peace, patriotism, and national cohesion—the ideals Buhari championed throughout his political life.
Flags at Half-Mast Nationwide
As previously announced, national flags are flying at half-mast across Nigeria for the full seven days of mourning , which began on Sunday, July 13 .
This public holiday marks one of the final official days of mourning before normal activities resume.
Citizens and institutions are encouraged to observe the day respectfully, aligning with the spirit of the mourning period.
Government Expresses Condolences
The Federal Government extended heartfelt sympathies to:
- The Buhari family , including his wife, Aisha Buhari, and their children
- The people of Katsina State
- All Nigerians who feel the loss of a former leader
“We pray that Almighty Allah grants his soul eternal rest in Aljannatul Firdaus,” the government said.
They added that Buhari’s contributions to Nigeria’s democratic process and security reforms remain deeply respected.
